Re: New small end bearings different

Thanks Adrian I too had planned to just fit the new pins in the old bearings but when I stripped the first one down I'd found the bearing had been turning in the small end so thought screw it I've come this far I'll replace the lot!

Re: New small end bearings different

Well eventually got silver fox tractor spares to answer the phone and it seems the hole in the new bushes is irrelevant and you have to drill new holes to suit and reamer the bushes to suit the pins

New small end bearings different

I'm still in the process of a complete rebuild on my majors engine but not sure about the new small end bearings I have. The old bearings had 3 holes in them with a X machined on the inside of the bearing, the 2 smaller holes lined up with the 2 holes in the conrod but the new bearings just have 1 h...

Re: Engine rebuild kit recommendations

Thanks Adrian I think they use Bepco stuff looking on their website and I've heard before Bepco is supposed to be decent. It's just hard to tell with some of the places selling rebuild kits if you're paying more for better quality or just more profit for them! I'm going to try and get the liners out...

Engine rebuild kit recommendations

I've made the decision to rebuild my major engine after pulling the pistons and finding one broke around the rings and the rest quite scored. I'm looking for recommendations of good rebuild kits (pistons, liners and want to replace the shells) and if there's any kits or companies to avoid/poor quali...

Re: 240psi compression

I know the head is good as I rebuilt it last year so I know it's the rings on number 1 causing the lower compression my question was, is 240psi low enough for that cylinder not to fire at all and would you expect the other 3 all being 330-340 enough to make it Start better than it does???

240psi compression

I've searched and searched and I'm pretty sure I know the answer but thought I'd run it by you guys with more knowledge about it than me. So my major is still a pig to start from cold and has to crank over and slowly coughs and splutters into life then starts fine when it's hot, but what I've found ...

Re: New owner E1A running/timing issue

Well valves and valve seats recut, head skimmed, new valve guides, reconditioned fuel pump and injectors, oil pick up cleaned out plus all the stuff I did at the start and it now runs lovely! Not the cheap fix I was hoping for but at least it should be fine for a while now. So now to start on the re...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

Just to bring this to a an end in case anybody is searching in the future as I hate finding a thread with no outcome! Basically I couldn't find an answer on what to replace rotator type valves with, I was hoping Brian was onto something with the suggestion of using the earlier parts but obviously th...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

The engine builders said they'll fit the guides if I get them. I just need to know if I order the early kit will it work with the inlet vale retainer springs from this spare head and if I'll then need 8.5 coil springs or 7 coil springs. Agriline are a waste of time and don't understand the valves th...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

Sorry Brian think I've confused matters the rotator cap I can get made and case hardened but I have just spoke to a guy about buying a 2nd hand head that has few bits missing does include a couple of rotator cap though. My main issue is when I stripped the head I found a couple of worn valve guides ...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

Brian do you mean the rotator caps or the spring retaining caps? The rotator caps I've asked an engineering company to make me a new one to replace the missing one but I thought if I ordered a new valve kit with valves, springs &guides I would need new spring retaining caps to suit the early valves ...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

Ok thanks Brian so even if I ordered the early valve kit and new inlet collets it wouldn't work without me getting new spring retainer caps from somewhere? I can't even just replace the valve guides as I think they are different aren't they for the rotator cap ones? It's turning into an absolute nig...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

As a couple of my valve guides are worn and the valve seats need cutting I thought I might as well buy a kit of new valves, guides & springs but I can see what Brian means about the aftermarket valves being different and not needing the rotator caps, the problem is they only seem to list early and l...

Re: Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

I'll hope it might drain out with the oil but I think I maybe clutching at straws! I think I'll see if I can have one machined up by a local engineering company seeing as they don't sound easy to come by.
You dont by any chance have your old ones do you ronald?

Thanks Brian so still time it to 26 degrees per the 70 pump not 19 like it says for the 75? I was worried there was some differences internally.

4A75S interchangeable with 4A70S injection pump

The diesel specialist has said my fuel pump isn't repairable but he said he had a reconditioned pump I could buy instead, he said it's the same just off the later model so my question is are they definitely interchangeable as the manual says not but I'm not sure if that's just because you need to ti...

Exhaust valve rotator cap missing

I'm in the middle of decoking my cylinder head at the minute and one of my rotator caps is missing and so far I'm struggling to find a replacement so just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or is it a case of put it back how it was and adjust the tappet for no cap?

Major exhaust valve rotator cap

When I stripped my cylinder head down I found one exhaust valve rotator cap missing, does anyone know where I could buy one or have a spare they'd like to sell as I'm struggling to find them listed anywhere?

Re: New owner E1A running/timing issue

Heared back from the diesel specialist today and pump is in a bad way, injectors just want cleaning. So looks like a new reconditioned pump. While I've been waiting I took the head off and found it had only really been running on 2 cylinders! I'm also losing compression on the 2 bad cylinders from t...

Re: New owner E1A running/timing issue

Well I took the side cover off and it's not a pretty site so looks like it's definitely had water sat in it and when I removed the pump lovely brown fluid ran out. Looks like the pump will be going to the diesel specialist with the injectors on Monday. Fingers crossed it's all salvageable and won't ...

Re: New owner E1A running/timing issue

Thanks for the replies sorry I wasn't clearer explaining it originally. I'm taking the injectors...

Re: New owner E1A running/timing issue

Thanks Brian I thought I'd be clutching at straws with the timing but better to confirm. The smoke is white light grey then as you rev it, it then goes dark grey black with a bit of diesel knock. I even wondered with the cold start button not sticking in if it was somehow on cold start all the time ...
