Re: Replacement lift arms
An update on this, since I always like to see people reporting back on their solutions... I have found someone with a pair of old arms that I can buy (not cheaply, mind), but in the meantime I have welded up the damaged arm and managed to repair it. I was nervous about further embrittlement of the c...

Re: Replacement lift arms
Hi John Good suggestion, and I thought of that; but the only issue is if the spline separation is out wrt to the original. I've not measured it yet (not had a chance and it was too cold!) but that's going to be my next move; I've actually been toying with the idea of getting a mill anyway, so it mig...

Re: Replacement lift arms
Images of the old (blue) and the new (dark red) https://ibb.co/gjrc66t https://ibb.co/bQQzBgf I cannot see any obvious corresponding flat on the splined cross shaft; tried a range of orientations for this arm and it does not want to go on. The original slips on and off easily, which, I gather, is a ...

Re: Replacement lift arms
Looking further, in this picture, the cross shaft has a flat, intended, presumably, to align with the flat on the lift arms. This is an example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202683777851 But my cross shaft does not have these flats: it's splined all around. So is mine not the correct SM cross shaft? W...

Re: Replacement lift arms
Thanks. It must be that the spline pattern is different on the cross-shaft; my concern is that if I replace the cross shaft to match the arms, it probably won't match the the mounts inside the rear end. Is there a way to machine the new arms to work? I don't have any way to cut splines, so I'd need ...

Replacement lift arms
Dear all I have a problem with one of the lift arms on my Super Major (1961); These are the parts: https://agrilineproducts.com/ford-fordson-lift-arm-lh-rh-4225 I had a heavy implement on the tractor (hedge cutter), and the split pin in the main pin coupling the lift arm broke, allowing the pin to f...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Bit of an update; sorry for the prolonged silence. I did the sump gasket and put in new lower cork and rope sealson the crank front and rear... and the leak is worse!! I must have buggered up installing the crank seals because it's literally dripping out when running from the drain hole in the clutc...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Taking the sump off for a leak isn't fun either! I think it was also leaking down the back of the timing cover, so dealing with that was helpful too, but I wish it had been exclusively that. Let's hope that the cork is malplaced and a new gasket and core with some jointing compound cures it... I'm w...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Thanks. I did find one missing bolt on the front side LHS of the front plate as you look at it, so there is a reasonable chance that the gasket has gone through somewhere, if that missing mounting has allowed it to move. Your point is a good one though, and it seems reasonable to condemn the sump si...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Hi John After I reassembled everything yesterday I gave it a reasonable run around the fields to warm it up - it only leaks when it's actively running - and parked it over the concrete apron to see if it was leaking while warm. It was; the oil is dribbling out between the back of the front plate and...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Hi John Yes, I'm in Essex; you kindly helped me out with a fuel cap a couple of years ago - mine was non-standard and blocked, so the tank was vacuuming and stopping the engine... until you assisted! If you do have one of the correct gasket going spare, I'd be extremely grateful. The other thing tha...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Ty Do you know what that gasket is called? I can see what must be it in the rebuild kits, but I don't need the half dozen other gaskets in the pack, having down all the other jobs already. Would be useful to know so I can order the right thing (taking I to account your point about two different desi...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Thanks for the detailed reply, John. God this job just keeps getting better! So I'm taking it all apart again, by the look of it! Grrr.
Does the tombstone come off without taking the axle apart, or do I need to undo the rails and pull the front end away?

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Update for you. Tractor is all back together, and works! I took the starter off and put a pry bar into the ring gear to jam the engine in the end. The starter nut is a conventional thread, as suggested above. The pulley came off easily with a ducksfoot puller, but just fiddly owing to restricted roo...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Thanks.
I thought of doing that, but removing rhe starter is a faff and I was hoping for a shortcut!
If I had the front off and could get an impact on it, that would solve it, but removing the front axle seems a bit extreme just to get a timing cover off!

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Thanks both. I have borrowed my neighbour's Stillson wrench, and I have a pulley puller that should get me into those holes okay. The problem I have is how to jam the engine? I have tried putting it in gear and locking on the brakes, but the engine just turns. I need some safe way to jam the cranksh...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
An update on my progress: I have replaced the seal on the gearbox input from the PTO / drive shafts; I've also replaced the small seal inside the PTO drive that surrounds the main drive shaft. It came out okay by bending it inwards with a screwdriver and then knocking it out. The replacement went in...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
I've got the seal out; a screwdriver down the side of it bent it in and I could then prise it out from below; now it's out I'm not actually sure what sort of seal it is, old or new. What's left of it is the usual steel outer with a rubber inner (or what was once a rubber inner - it's totally worn aw...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Fair enough. Thinking ahead, when I need to get the new seal over the splines on the driveshaft, any idea how I can prevent the new seal getting massacred?

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
I'm still confused by this assembly; this cannot be a seal, surely? The grey-coloured structure at the end sits less proud than the brass-coloured bit; it's also hard, not rubbery. It cannot be working as a seal. Or am I looking at totally the wrong thing? https://i.postimg.cc/JzRDgMLs/IMG-20230223-...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
I've now had a closer look at this part, now I've cleaned it all up, and I think it might be the old type seal, unless I'm looking at the wrong thing? It's a sequence of brass rings, at the front end (closest to the splines) of which is a grey - what feels like a hard metal ?steel - grey insert. I t...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play
Meanwhile, does anyone know what that inner seal, between the main driveshaft and the PTO driveshaft on the gearbox input, is actually called?
I will need to buy a replacement, but I can't find what it's called so I don't know what to search out!
