Re: My Super Major restoration
Thank you. Luckily I'm on the west coast so it's not bad right now. Rick, 110 is small potatoes for me. Our primary voltage is 14,400!

Re: My Super Major restoration
I, too think it will work fine the way it is. I'll be able to tell better once I get everything cleaned up. I probably won't have much time for it the next few days with Hurricane Matthew bearing down on us. I'm a lineman for the local electric cooperative (hence the name lectricman) so I'll probabl...

Re: My Super Major restoration
Yes, I did get the other liners out! A little reinforcement on my puller and they came right out. I was amazed at the amount of scale and buildup that was in the water jackets around the liners, especially cylinder # 4. It is amazing that the thing wasn't overheating: http://i15.photobucket.com/albu...

Re: My Super Major restoration
William, that is interesting that your Super was the same color. Do you know the history of it? Makes me wonder if yours and mine were related at one time in their past. If these machines could talk, the stories they would tell!

Re: My Super Major restoration
Of course! Hopefully I'll be able to get the remaining liners out and clean the block this weekend. I'll be sure to post some pictures. On another note, I just picked up another complete double clutch and flywheel on ebay. It looks to be in very good condition and has new clutch discs too! That's a ...

Re: My Super Major restoration
I finally managed to get the first liner out today. It took about an hour and a half and broke the bottom piece of my puller. So the rest are on hold until I manufacture a new piece. On the bright side however the inside of the block look to be in very good condition including the slot for the O-rin...

Re: My Super Major restoration
Thanks, Adrian. That's pretty much what I was doing until the top of my puller started spreading and bending. I'll be adding reinforcement to it in the morning and try again.

Re: My Super Major restoration
Any suggestions for removing the liners? I have a homemade tool that is similar to the factory tool, but these things aren't budging! I'm concerned about damaging the top of the engine block with the tool. I have tried applying heat with a propane torch around the top and bottom of the liner. Any ot...

Re: My Super Major restoration
I'm glad to hear that about the liners! I too have 15w40 in the '56 and plan to try something different when I change the oil next time. I don't know if Morrises is available over here, but I will look into it. Tractor Supply locally carries a wide variety of straight grade oils that are supposed to...

Re: My Super Major restoration
Agriline now do both liners, the one you need is 7071 if it is a single "O" ring or 7072 for the double. The liners should push in with your hand, if they are tight it means the "O" ring grooves are not clean enough or you have the wrong liner. I saw the listing for the two different liners. It has...

Re: My Super Major restoration
I still need to measure the crank journals with a micrometer to see how worn they are. I have not been able to find any place that supplies cam bearings for these engines. There are none in the engine now, and I know it would need to be line bored to fit them. My question is, what diameter should th...

Re: My Super Major restoration
Haha, I knew the orange paint would get people talking! Sadly, I don't have any history on it. I found it on craigslist among an ad for "old tractors for sale". The man I bought it from said he had bought about eight years prior with the intention of restoring it and just never got around to...

My Super Major restoration
Well, it finally begins!! I'm starting the restoration of my 1961 Super Major and I want to share it with everyone here. I've had the tractor for about a year, but haven't had the time to tear into it until now. I will try to document everything along the way, and I'm sure there will be lots of ques...

Re: Adding a front loader
Well, it sounds like I should be able to make it work for me. Brian, thank you for all the helpful information. Your keen knowledge of these wonderful machines is such a great asset to all of us trying to keep these tractors alive. Now if only I could find a good deal on a factory power steer...

Re: Adding a front loader
That's what I thought, but I wasn't for sure on it. I think the super would be a better bet, because it also has a live pto. I understand the auxiliary services knob needing to be in the right position, but you mentioned using the main control in the quadrant. What did you mean by that? Would the ma...

Re: Adding a front loader
Thank you for the reply, Brian. I am still a little confused, though. The loader has two hoses that would connect to the tractor. Both of them have identical fittings on them. The other end of those two hoses attach to what I'm assuming is a type of spool valve with the two levers that control the l...

Adding a front loader
Hello all, It has been quite some time since I posted anything on here, but I still visit regularly. I have a question regarding the addition of an aftermarket type front end loader to one of my Majors. My uncle has an older Bush Hog brand loader he wants to get rid of. It is a model 2400QT. Measure...

Re: Two more tractors bought today
Nice catch. 8) I see the Power Major has a raised PTO. I do not see a Live Drive Badge on the grill. After running it on the topper, you should have figured out if it is a live drive or not. Hi Dave There is one picture there that gives a clue, even without a badge  my moneys on it's live dri...

Re: And then there were two... My new Super Major
Looks like I will find out when I get into it. It will probably be awhile longer, though. The a/c died on the house yesterday and its looking like I will need a whole new unit
. I guess if it isn't one thing, it's another.

Re: And then there were two... My new Super Major
Here's where the luck factor kicks in. Let's hope that oil emulsion hasn't corroded the crank and the cam and its bearings. Great photos. Looking forward to seeing more as you get deeper into the engine. Good luck. Best Adrian  No kidding! Are cam bearings even available? I don't think I ha...

Re: And then there were two... My new Super Major
I had a little time this afternoon and decided to take a closer look at the new Super. As I posted earlier, there seems to be water getting into the oil, so I pulled the valve cover to at least have a look. What I found was not pretty at all: http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a357/lectricman/IMG_201...

Re: And then there were two... My new Super Major
I didn't document the rebuild of the '56 as well as I should have, so I plan to take lots of pictures as I go through the Super. All of the pictures on this great site, as well as the knowledge of the members, are such a great asset to have available. I hope to be able to help some other people alon...

Re: And then there were two... My new Super Major
I'm actually kinda looking forward to rebuilding it, to be honest. I rebuilt the engine on my '56 Major and thoroughly enjoyed it. This time around I will be taking care to not overlook some of the little things I didn't do with the first one. My '56 still has low oil pressure when hot, but I never ...
