power major head?

Post by willy wagon »

got a power major apart, it had two siezed pistons to liners. it has staggered ports in the cyl head, and flat top liners. kind of hard to tell but looked like it had a copper head gasket. which headgasket would be rite for it.? also the pistons have a central chamber as to the ones that are offside yet i se no other difference, but the manual stats only certian pistons with certian liners? i dont quite follow that? will it run with .008 thou clearance between the liner and pistons and new rings or is that a waste of time? would at least get it runnibg then see what the rest of the tractor is like as i know nothing about its history. so lots of questions i know, maybe someone can help me out. thank-you

Be very careful! You do not have a Power Major engine, you have an early Mk1 engine and there are many differences between that and a Power Major.

The head.

and pistons are just the start.

You have a different oil pump with the relief valve in the front timing cover and a different, cast steel crank which is very fragile.

You should find the engine number on the flange behind the starter, that will give you the correct date and there will be casting codes on the cylinder head and block. Head code is on the manifold side and block code is above the dynamo.

ok so that explains a few things. the crank and all bearings seem quite good. it apparently siezed from sitting.is it worth putting new rings and head gasket on it?

Yes, but remember it is around 12 hp less than a Power Major. You may need to use a composite gasket and your torque for the head will be less as you have smaller head bolts.

Apart from that, it has been around 60 years and has only failed because of standing up. Pretty good in my book!

thanks again brian for all the info. soi think i will order head gasket and rings, it is cheap if it will run. i found a no. on the raised part of block ahead of inj. pump. it is R58528, which my manual did not show.. buy the way i got my engine kit from agriline, for my super major they seem pretty good to deal with. i may build up the liner ring groves on one or two cyls, although they are not too bad.
