Disc brake house removal
Hi
I have a leakage in the right hand disc brake, and need to replace the seal in the brake housing.
According to repair manual:
7. If necessary remove the brake housing taking care not to disturb the bull pinion housing and shims whilst carrying out this operation.
I have the hydraulic cover off, and when I pull out the brake house, the bull pinion housing is coming along.
It is all moving easily a few mm back and forth, but I am not able to remove the brake house.
The brake house is stuck on the shaft.
Is there any parts more I need to loosen, or do I have to use more force?

You need to separate the brake housing from the bull pinion carrier. Holding the bull pinion should help get the seal to let go, and some gentle taps should separate the bull pinion carrier from the brake housing. The seal is in the brake housing.There should be no need to remove the top cover for this.

I will give it a try.
I wanted to be on the safe side, not damaging anything.
Since everything was rotating easily, and the seal was old, I assumed it would slip easily.

I am struggling to remove the brake housing.
It seems that the brake housing and the bull pinion housing are completely connected.
I tried using a small chisel to press out the brake housing, then a crowbar, and finally a large lever.
Unfortunately, the brake housing was damaged in the process.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

That's unfortunate, at this stage I hope you can find a press to separate the two (you could try the puller bolts in the bull pinion carriers but I suspect it'll be a bit tough for them to shift), probably worth asking friends for help. I've never heard of such sticking for these parts. What's damaged by the way?

I finally managed to remove the brake house.
I removed the bull gear, and then the brake house and bull pinion housing came out as one part, quite easily.
What suprises me, it seems to be one part, the brake house and the bull pinion housing.
Is that possible?

One photo is named damage, and shows a crack. It seems to me that the left part of the brake house is welded to the right part, and the crack is in the welding.
Two photos are magnified, and shows were I had expected to see the border between brake house and the bull pinion housing.
I cant see any border.

Those parts all look fine, the diff lock has a bit of wear but not someting to worry about. If that's your LH brake then the RH should do the same, there are a couple of holes for puller bolts in the bull pinion carrier which might come in handy, I think it's the same bolts as hold the assembly on. Don't loose the shims!

I am not able to see the mating face at all. These two pieces must have a perfect fit.
I used emery paper and steel wool to clean up, but still no visible mating face.
It may also explain the reason why it not came apart, instead making a crack in the breakhousing.

I don't think it's possible that those two could be a single piece, it makes no sense to have to do all you've done just to change the bull pinion seal. The puller bolts are your best bet. The shims are for setting the diff bearing preload and on the LH side the crown wheel backlash, and unless you see need to make adjustments put back exactly what came out.

I finally manged to separate the two pieces. I was not aware of the bull pinion also was flanged on the outside of the back-end gear housing.
It seems like the previous owner has glued the two pieces together.

He probably used jointing compound there, as it does need sealing. Glad it's now separate.
