Hydraulic adjustment on Super Major-64

Hi!
I have a Super Major -64 with a bit strange function in the hydraulic lift. The lifting capacity is 100% OK. Both with auxillery services and in the lift arms. The position control and the draft control function seem to be OK, but only for the upper 20% of the moving segment of the lift arms. For example; If the control level is in lowest position and I start to move it upwards to lift the arms nothing happens until I have mowed approx 75% of the segment. Then the arms go into relevant position and the position control and the draft control seams to work OK. But at this point the implement in use is lifted up from the ground and out of work....

All the seals etc. in the system are renewed last year. I have also checked the setting of the main spring for the draft control.

So my conclusion so far is that I need to adjust the internal linkage. I have the manual for this work, (New super major hydraulics pages 43 to 50) but the problem is that it refers to two special tools; T8512/g and T8517-1 used to "measure up the right gaps" during the adjusting process.

Do anyone now the size of this tools?? How many inches / millimetres are the right size of the gaps?

I would be happy for any help in this matter and I hope you can handle my English! ( I am Swedish)

Best regards!

Sorry that I cannot answer your question regarding the width of the two ends of the special tool shown in the service manual but as you have probably read, with the NP Super hydraulics, only the Position Control end of the gauge is used. I am sure some very knowledgeable members will know the width of this end of the gauge. However could I ask a question? If you raise the quadrant lever to the top, does the hydraulic pump cut out after the lift arms have reached the fully raised position? I ask because I have just had my 63 NP hydraulics adjusted by Brian Smith, one of the senior fitters at Ernest Doe in Marlesford, Suffolk, who used to work on these tractors in the 60's. Before making the adjustments he had to replace the worn knock-off pin and, crucially, the control valve bush, which was worn enough to leak oil and cause the pump to continue pumping when the lift arms were fully raised. [I had to have a new control valve bush made at a local engineering firm, as replacement parts are now unavailable.]

Best wishes

Adrian

Visit the Wiki from the home page.

http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/wiki/ ... ePage.html

The full procedure is detailed here:

DextaAndSuperMajorHydraulicSetting

You will need the code "forsontractorpages" and the password "dotty" to get in.

I am very interested! Where did you get your "name"? It is a local vehicle registration.

Hi Adrian, and Thanks Brian!

Adrian; Yes, the system cut the oil flow when the lifting arm reach top position. (The problem is the lack of position controll in lower positions, and what I would call an ower-reacting draft controll. -First no reaction, and later on when the weels start to slip, the system lift the arms high up and a plow fore example, goes out of the soil. )

Brian; Thank you for the very nice article! Hopfully I will find time to do the adjustments, "whit it in my hand", during next week. My "name" is as you concluded a local viechle registration. It´s a swedish number. One the sign on the viechle it is written "FPW 501" with a small space between letters and figures. - And of course the viechle is a Fosdon!

Best regards!

That is also one of the registration numbers for my area. they would be: FPW 501 or 501 FPW or FPW 501 A or A 501 FPW depending on the year of registration. I wondered if she had been exported to Sweden from Norfolk. :D

Now its working!

I putted the tractor back in one piece yesterday, and the position controll now works 100% OK. I also think the draft controll is really OK, but I have not tried it in real heavy work yet. The actuall problem was the small roller on the arm detecting the position of the lift arms. It was no roller anymore as it had stucked on the shaft and became flat "on one side". I had a new one produced. I used the material from an used valve piston guide from the fordson diesel engine. The out side diameter is a bit bigger than original, but it works!

Thank you Brian for your assitance!
