Hi all,
Its time I fitted the pto selector seal I bought months ago, I am assuming the selector needs to be taken off and when I do oil will come out !!! Where and how much should I drain and where do I refill ?
Trying to to sort the major for the summer, just fixed the starter now looks like the dynamo is not charging !!!

It will be all the gearbox oil, about 4.5 gallons very roughly. Refill via the plug near the clutch linkage and top up to the marked level.

Ignore the casting code wording.

These things do take a lot of oil dont they !!!!
Wheres the best place to get the oil?
I assume its not Halfords.....

You could use Halfords, they do a very good 20/50W for old engines which would go in the gearbox or Google Morris of Shrewsbury who also do a range of very good oils which you can order over the net.

You could also put the old oil back if it is OK.

Ok, I have removed the pto selector. I now have no idea how I'm supposed to replace the seal
Cant re use the oil its like mud !!!!

I have now dismantled the pto selector lever but still cant see how to get the old seal out, it also looks different to the new one I have, is there one or two seals in there?

You will probably have to destroy the old seal to get it out.
I presume you have the selector shaft out of the housing. You should be able to check that the outside and inside diameters of the new seal are correct before destroying the old seal. The thichness of the new seal will probably be thinner, but that wont matter, just don't drive the new seal all the way in.
Make sure the shaft is free of sharp edges when putting it back in. Don't want to nick or cut the new seal on reassembly.

Yep the shaft is out of the housing, wasn't sure if the metal disc which looks like it stops the seal coming out needs to be re-used or if it is part of original seal ....

The best way to put a new seal in, is to make a tool. Outside dia the same as the seal. Machine a nose on it the same size as the inner dia of the seal and the inside of the small hole where the axle is going in. Put the oiled seal on the tool. Put the nose in the hole. Get it strait in front of the hole and use a hammer to get it in.

Well I have fitted the new seal and put it all back together,
filled it with oil and will wait and see as the seal wasn't very hard
to push in....
