hello folks im 15 and looking to buy a major soon after i sell my quad, first of all what is the differance between a power major ans a super major?. also i want the 6cy one are they standard or have they had a conversion? im wanting one that runs well and ready to be done up maybe in the future make it into a tractor puller, any awnsers would be much appreciated.

Hi Gregor,
Welcome to the board. New Major came first in 1952, followed by Power Major in '58 then Super Major in '61. Bet that makes even your Dad feel young!

Hi Gregor,
Welcome to the board. New Major came first in 1952, followed by Power Major in '58 then Super Major in '61. Bet that makes even your Dad feel young!

ok thanks alot for that im used to tractors as my dad has a case 1056xl and a 956xl and i also have a mf 35 an we have 2 jcb's so i know what im on with

With the 6 Cylinder models you are opening a whole can of worms. Pretty much these are convertions. Dandy Dave!

iv been told that they was some 6cy one made and are standard but hard to find, what is the differance between a power and a super?

Welcome to the forum,my next favourite tractor to the blue ones is the 9 and 1056 inters

I used to drive both for a contractor back in my days in the U.k. its one of the few tractors a guy can drive with no radio because that motor having the coal poured to it is enough music on its own

Memorys over so Back to why we are here, I have heard there is a few factory 6 cyl 2wd tractors too but never seen one and they have never been acknoleged by ford the last I heard. If it did exist it would probably be worth 40.000 pounds at current stupid prices

if you want to buy a 6 and pull with it i would buy a dead drive transmission tractor as the clutch would be stronger but this is not so good if you want to use the hydraulics and pto on the farm. you will need to figure out what the most use would be and get a well made conversion

some are horrible

on the difference between the 2 the brakes and hydraulics are different, the super has disc brakes, power has drums. proper draft and position control on a super hyds, the power is pretty much up or down simple system. The super should also have diff lock, the power does not. the only real downfall on the supers is that some of the final drive in the back end is weaker
than the power majors , the teeth chip on the bull wheels and pinion shafts, can be a bit of a down fall with heavey abuse in tractor pulling, Been there and seen a few crunch I have seen the odd standard abused power chip them too so it might be a buyer be ware thing on any major

thanks robert that was a great help yes we have 2 very tidy exapmles of the 56's not sure if i woul be allowed to post pictures on here or not?, i doubt would make it into a tractor puller i want one to play with and restore it will work a log splitter and flail topper etc and general work around the small hoilding as my parents are seperated and now i need my own tractor to work with at my mums.

Could it be they talk about 6 cil with the cast steel sump and because of that they call them original.
As far as I know, Ford has NEVER build in a 6 cil engine in the major. They were afraid that the rear end was to weak.

This is a little project we did last year, it has a 5.9ltr Cummins 160hp engine. Worst part was getting the rear engine housing right. We also had to custom machine a flywheel to suit. Overall the tractor is only 8inches longer than original.
