hi guys,

I've recently bought myself a 1961 super major, or so I think. It was just sat at work, outside and looking sorry for its self, I thought this was a shame as the previous owner had not done to bad a job of restoring it. also its a similar tractor we used to have on our farm years ago and one that my dad learned to drive on, So I approached my boss and the deal was done.

Now the question is what actually is it, people have told me different stories and I'm still not sure. It has a super major bonnet and front grill, It has disc brakes, diff lock, from my little knowledge so far this tells me super major, yet It doesn't have live drive and it seems to be running a major engine, also with the high and low for the gears, high box is the lever down and low box is when the lever is in the up position.

Everything looks original, but could this be a mix match that someone has put together or could it be from the factory like this. some people have told me live drive was an option from the new, others say it could of been a use up of parts at the factory, who knows??

so what do you guys think,

Do you have any af the casting codes?? a engine serial code will tell if the engine have been replaced

But when you are saying disc brakes its defently a super major, and it has also low and hi gear, my 63 smnp has also it

When the high box is lever down theres not live drive on, it was when lever was up see it at http://www.agrilineproducts.com/partsca ... major.html part number 56001

but find the casting codes a throw pictures up we want to see her

Good on you for saving a Fordson.
As Kenneth has said
High gear up = standard clutch, no live drive
Disc brakes= Super Major
Casting codes will tell you the day, month and year manufactured

I was also told that the front wheels are major and not super major. Is this true.

Nice tractor , pretty good shape

Its seems like you're missing the drawbar arm it should look like this marked in blue



Your engine seems to come from a 61 power major, if i'm looking correct on the chart the engine number should it have started with 08A if its a super, but maybe yours an early super..

The casting should say something like 1G20 (20 july 1961)

There is a fairly easy to find near the oil plug to the transmission, and near left side lower lift arm bracket

did you mean here, the first number up from the plug is 1F2.


this is the one near the lower link arm bracket....the one you cant see reads as M240..I think.

or am I just not looking at the right numbers...

Sorry forgot the wheels, they are not super major, they were casted with three holes

The casting on the transmission says 7 december 1960, and on rear axel its 24 october 1960, i asumed that the 0 was a D...

This could be an super were they used the last parts from the power major at the assembly, mayby brian could tell

oh forgot to say, i do have the drawbar as well. looking forward to getting it inside soon and then getting a few bits done.

First Super build on October 24 1960 has number 1575971. Build from half December 1960 until half January 1961. The wheels are from a New Major. The 3 hole wheels were introduced with the Power Major.
P7D is December 7 1960
M24D is October 1960. So your rear end is the first to be build on a Super.

Looks like most of your questions have been answered. we have live and dead drive power and super majors over here in Canada so could be a genuine factory gearbox, I only ever saw the 52 -57 ish dead drives on any in the U.k before coming here, I kinda wonder if the later ones where more for export than home market.
