Heavy ploughing

I've just done a day's work ploughing very heavy land. The transmission on Majors is not quiet but I am sure there are some unwelcome rattling and clanking noises that I didn't hear before.

I have a NP Super and the ploughing required a foot on the diff lock pedal at regular intervals. I was careful to engage it before any wheel spin. Could anyone tell me what is likely to break in the rear end or the gearbox?

Many thanks

Adrian

Hi Adrian,My np super had an unusual squeak or rattle in the rh side of the backend which went when i readjusted the brakes on that side,it might be worth checking .I replaced all the gearbox and halfshaft bearing in mine and checked the crownwheel carefully and it still whines and rattles,i asked a mechanic locally who worked on them back in the day and he said they were all like that .Hope this helps,Liam

Hi Liam

I love this site because of the stored wisdom available. Everything you say makes complete sense. It also chimes with advice I received last night from another wise person on Fordson matters. Fordson Major transmissions do whine, clank and clatter, and that's all I was hearing.

I'm in awe of the rear end rebuild you did.

Kind regards

Adrian
