Hi all
I live in southport merseyside i have just renoovated a tef 20 ferguson and i am in the procese of renovating a fordson major reg no rve 97 The serial no is 1409058 the engine no is1539125 i take it the serial no and engine no are the same therfore i take it has had a engine change at some point in time.
The tractor is unusual it has a e27n gear box and a reductoin box would this tractor have been produced at the factory like this.
Any information about this tracor would be apreciated :D .

Hi Mel welcome to the forum :)
The major you have sounds familiar for some reason , I think in the last 2 years or so somebody posted an E bay link to this or a very similar tractor on here.
Just a friendly humorous comment please don't take offense you should maybe have put the Ferguson in the post second this is the Fordson board all the rest go in general discussion   :)
Yes the number should match for that age tractor, the later ones just had engine number and no plate on the bulk head:) it looks like you have an 11th month 1956 tractor and an engine from 1st month 1960.
could we please see some pictures of this project :?: .
The other thing to check would be all the casting codes as this will tell you what year the rest is the bulk head number could just refer to that part, you say the gearbox is maybe E27N the axles could be another year and so could the hydraulic top housing.
Hope you have a great time on the forum and if your stuck one of your new found Fordson friends will try and help you :)
Regards Robert

Hi all
no offence taken Robert not by me nor the grey one :D .
I have found what i think are a couple of casting codes.
One on the rear axle no n20z
One on the gear box c28x.
Hoping to sort some pictures out soon.
Many thanks Mel

Hi Melvin

According to my books N20z gives you 20th November 1956 which ties up with the tractor no.
C28X gives 28th March 1955 which seems too early to be original for that tractor number.
Hope that helps

Hi Mel
The E27n finished in 52.
How many gears does your tractor have without the reduction box in gear :?: does it have a high low range lever connected by the right side of the steering box under the fuel tank. with high and low you have 6F and 2R gears on a new major .
The E27n has 3F and 1 R gears . I was wondering if you had the E27n box in the new major casting or if you just have the main gear shift lever from the E27n fitted to your new major :?:
This sounds like what we call in the tractor trade a " Heinze 57" or what our Fordson guru Brian would call an "A.S.P" ( ALL SPARE parts) But I guess it gives you a unique piece of somebodys engineering and farming history :)

Hi Robert
Many thanks for your helpful reply it has the high low range lever hence six forward and two reverse as you said.
Going by the casting code and the number of gears it must be a major gearbox so i take it it just has the gear shift lever from the e27n fitted,
Now i am asking myself how would the selectors line up :?: or is it going to be one of lifes mysteries

Hi Mel
I think the selectors on the box for the 3 ranges and reverse are in the same place on both gear boxes ive never had an e27n one apart , its the high low that's different as the e27n doesn't have it hense 3F and 1R. the only part that is different is the location of the shifter. as you sit on your tractor just in front of the seat on the left top side of the axle casting(just behind the seam of the gearbox and axle casting) do you have a flat rectangular plate or something else bolted on the casting with 4 bolts. If you do this was the location of the original gear stick. it had a rod and selector fork that ran forward internally to the location of the selector pack of the original selector plate.
I hope this makes sense and I could tell you right away with the pictures
