just finished rebuilding a super major engine. checked all clearances with plastigage. it was all good. oil pressure stays at abour 30-35 idling or reved, not much difference oil pump was not new. time for new oil pump? also wander why the lift control goes up but will not go down?

I would think that 35 pounds is alright. When the oil pump gets pressure enough to push off the relief spring, it will not push anymore pressure than that it is regulated for. Dandy Dave!

With new bearings and and a new pump you should really be getting an oil pressure north of 40psi. The engine in the photos sits at 45psi when cold and drops to 41psi after a day's heavy ploughing. Having done all the hard work to strip the engine, I would advise investing in a new pump.

My np super has a reground crank, new bearings and a new oil pump shows 45 psi at start up like Adrians .My blue and orange super with a very worn engine shows 38 psi at start up.

I would start by checking your pressure gauge with a known good one and see that they agree with each other. If your gauge checks out OK, I’d have to agree with Dave, it’s a used pump, the relief spring is probably a little weak, but nothing to get overly concerned about.

As the others have said its reliant on the wear and relief spring pressure. if you have a known gauge and say it reads higher 20's then its getting oil round, yes higher pressure is really better. The major is not a high reving motor and will run for years with 10 psi or less,
I know its not ideal and they will be re built when money allows , I have some here that are 5 psi when hot and guys I got them from say it's been like that 20 years or more . I would worry more if pressure suddenly dropped from say 25 to 5 or less in a short time personally.

thanks all for the replies. i think will order a new pump from agriline. they are not that much. the rest of the tractor is in so good confition i will likely keep it.
