Hydraulic filter change question

Hi all , I have changed the hydraulic filter on my super major when putting the new one on i cannot see how the returning oil gets filtered ! The pipe just goes strait through the filter and into the what looks like a relief valve. I cannot se how it goes through the filter should my pipe have some holes in the middle where it goes through the filter body?
I may be being a regard and missing something obvious? Any help would be great!
