Valve Clearances/Injector pump timing

Post by marcusgs »

Help!

I have come to the stage where I need to do the two things I have least been looking forward to on my Dexta engine rebuild.

Firstly I require guidance on setting the valve clearances, I have a basic idea of what you need to do, but can anyone help a new guy out?

Secondly, I need to re-fit the injector pump, which has been totally refurbished, the gear is not currently attached, and there is a note on it saying that the timing is locked and that a device must be removed before the engine is started, can anyone shed any light on what this device is?

Now do I simply bolt the gear back on, and line up the timing marks, or is it as I suspect, a little more complex than that!

Regards,
Mark

I set the valve clearance up as follows.
If No 1 inlet valve is fully open, Set no 1 exhaust clearance, If no 1 Exhaust valve is fully open, Set no 1 inlet clearance. Do no's 2 & 3 the same. Not sure if this is the correct way, but it works for me.
Injector pump timing. There is a small inspection plate on the casing where the timing gear is. If you remove this you should see a timing mark. line this up with the mark on the injector pump boss. Open the timing mark cover on the bell housing. You should be able to see the flywheel. Rotate the flywheel until you see the 'SPILL' timing mark. Next thing to do is to get the pistons on the right stroke. I found the easiest way was to remove the rocker cover. If no 1 piston is on the correct stroke, you should have both exhaust and inlet valves closed. Should be valve clearance on both valves. If not, you will have to rotate the motor 1 full turn. Line up the Spill timing mark, and the injector pump timing mark, then bolt on the gear. Hope this helps

If the pump is locked I would contact the firm that refurbished it in order to establish what the procedure is to unlock it.

With regard to timing the pump and adjusting the tappet clearances I would stongly reccomend that you read the relevant sections in the workshop manual, the write up and digrams cleary explain the procedure. A copy of the manual is available on Stephans web site at

which you will be able to download.
