Help with halfshafts

Hi, I have got to the stage with my 58' Dexta rebuild that I need to replace the halfshafts. These have been taken out to replace the bearings and seals, along with the trumpet housings. The trumpet housings have been re-installed, however, upon re-inserting the half shafts into the trumpet housings, the halfshafts will not go 'home' the final inch or so to the housing. Is it a case of the shafts need to be pulled home with the ring of studs around the housing, or am I missing something here?
