cylinder liners and engine rebuid

Post by john.n »

I am currently in the process of stripping my 1960 dexta engine down. I am trying to guage if i need new liners in the the block or not, how big can the wear ridge at the top of the liner be before it is beyond hope?
Any top tips for removing carbon deposits?

many thanks

when I was at school many years ago I learned that the wear in the sylinder is acceptable up to about 0,2 mm on the diameter. But this will always be a question about use, handling and money. The risk of getting oil-consumption is bigger with old liners, and all that work with overhauling is also worth some money. so all in all if you change the rings- change the liners too

I removed one of the pistons today. dosent look too bad. top ring was broken in one place. carbon down to first ring only. con rod bearing has 2 scraches inline with the oil feed in the crank, but not worn through to the copper backing, some minor marks on the crank.
the liners are worn very smooth. probably the reason for the very heavy breathing.
will a glaze buster be enough clean up liners?

many thanks.

A glaze buster will do a reasonable job of honing them.

I have just had new liners fitted in mine and it was not as expensive as I thought it would be (I used Walter Bates in Nottingham)

Full engine kit was sub 150 quid for the parts (gaskets, pistons, rings, liners etc).

I paid 250 ish for the liners fitted, bored and honed but, that also included a crank re-grind
