Hi
I recently had to buy a new steering nut kit as my original was rather pitted etc. I have read from my workshop manual that one should remove or add shims to get all the play out of the steering nut, which I have tried but with little success. I have also replaced the oil seal. Please can someone help.
Kind regards
Mervyn

Re: Steering Gear Main Nut
Mervyn,
If the play is definetly at the steering column and you have removed all the shims from under the top cover and you still have play, try putting a washer or shim between the cover and the bearing race. So that the shim fits inside the column and is clamped between the cover and the bearing. A piece of thick jointing or cardboard will do to establish if this will eliminate the play.

Thanks for your valuable advice. I had three very thin shims and a top and bottom paper gaskets also very thin under the cover plate. I removed two of the shims which eliminated the play very well but that made the turning with the steering wheel a bit tight. I then replaced one of the shims making it now two plus the paper gaskets and that brought back the slight play in the nut. I guess it is just a case of trial and error now, hopefully less error.

Re: Steering Gear Main Nut
Well, I think I have managed to arrive at a happy medium with that main nut by just using the two original paper gaskets and no shims.
