Rear axle shaft

Post by Mervyn Spencer »

Hi
I was wondering whether the axle shafts from the 1961 Dexta and 1963 S/Dexta are interchangeable. The bearings on the 61 axle are bad and has the dreaded shrink sleeve retainer, whereas the bearings on the S/Dexta axle look good and have the retainer nut, although previously removed and replaced using a hammer and chisel  .(Previous owner). If the axles are interchangeable I may just change them rather than replacing the whole rear end which I intended to do earlier. The diff lock idea is just a would be nice issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Mervyn

Axles are the same and interchangeable, the later type with nut is all you can get now. If I remember correctly its the same halfshaft in the later "X" and "Y" series.

Thats great Brian, thanks.

I think I might take the easy route and change the half shafts for the time being and consider changing the rear ends later, if I am strong enough for that.
