Afternoon all, ive now got to the point in my project that once ive steam cleaned and prepared it, I will be ready to paint it. Having never used an air spray gun before, I take it you need to thin the paint down, but how much? I will be using tractol paint most likely. Also my compressor charges up to 100psi, do I need a regulator so I can set the pressure down a bit?
Oh yay, look, another seized bolt! Lets get a hammer.....and some kano.....and some cider!

I use about 20% thinners with my paint.
I have also been using a smaller touchup spray gun to allow me to get in and around the harder to get at bits.
Pressure will be dependent on the gun you use so check the info that came with it as the HP guns and LPHV guns use very different pressures.

I have always found thinning as per the instructions on the can or provided by the paint supplier works very well. Be carefull about water. Always drain the water out of the compressor tank before starting. If you are buying a regulator see if you can get a filter/regulator. That will help.

I'm a rookie DIY sprayer aswell. I bought a HVLP gun with a mini regulator, which I set at 40psi. Your gun should give you an operating pressure...
I tend to use about 5% thinners because the temperature isn't so great here. I think I'm getting ok results. Rubbed the first blue coat down yesterday with 800 grit wet and dry. More blue stayed on the tractor than came off, thank Jebus! lol
I find that by taking your time, and rubbing down in between coats, you cannot go wrong. After rubbing down wash with warm soapy water, allow to dry thoroughly and then clean again with a good panel wipe.
My best advice is just go for it! You can get bogged down with advice and tips etc and at the end of the day you'll learn by doing. Good luck anyway mate, don't be afraid and remember light coats and rubbing down in between is the key!
