Hydraulics have stopped working

Post by jeveriss »

Hi,
Whilst topping some fields the other day I stopped for an hours break, started her back up and found the back arms were completely unresponsive. Due to a small leak I presumed the fluid had dropped too low and decided to drain the system and replace (without first testing for pressure at the aux output  ). There turned out to be over 20 litres of pretty black hydraulic fluid.
I've taken off the lift arm assembly and although the linkages inside are pretty worn and loose there doesn't seem to be anything obvious that would cause the system to stop working suddenly, and the lift was working just before a stopped.
Any ideas what could have caused this?
Thanks

It does not seem that the sump was low on oil before you drained it. However, if it is that dirty maybe the intake filter screen is clogged and you are not able to suck up enough oil to get pressure. Take the off the right foot rest, the brake linkage and remove the pump and slide out the pick up tube and clean it out. You will need to recreate the circle gasket for the pump and replace the o ring too upon reinstallation. Clean out the sump while you are there. Put it back together and see what happens. It is easier than you think.
It would be great to have the hydraulics working

I've tested the pump by cranking and it seems to have a good flow on it, I've dismantled the lift, checked all the valves, cleaned everything and I'm now waiting for replacement o-rings and gaskets. The cam follower pin on the lift control mechanism was sheered off, but I'm not sure if that was the cause of the problem or not as the valve was still being opened. The lift was pretty bad beforehand anyway so it all needed doing.... I enjoy it all anyway

just thought lol
what condition is the lift cylinder in mate ? whould be a good plan to change the piston seal also, there are two types of seals one is a 'lip' seal to be fitted to original cylinders / pistons , the other is a o'ring and backup ring seal ,which is for more modern cylinders .

i fitted , wrongly , thebackup ring jobbie which leaked , (the original didnt lol) so had to strip it all again to fit the lip seal one like my original one was .
hope this makes some sence ?????? :D

all good fun

I've ordered a new lip seal for the piston, and have replaced the pin using a 8mm bolt (reduced the size a little by hand to get it to 5/16) I think a drill bit would be too brittle.
I'm trying to adjust the lift settings but am having a little trouble following the wiki method....

"Adjust the turnbuckle on the control valve until the front edge of the control valve is 10mm from the rear face of the control valve bush in the ram cylinder." :scratchhead:

So... Do I measure this distance from the far side of the control valve where the spring is located? If I measure from the push rod side I run out of thread. I've no idea which end of the bush is the back, nor which end of the valve is the front!

Thanks

i had same trouble with the length of available thread on mine too . which meant that i ended up with a slow lift when set on draught . ( because the valve wasnt being pushed in very far .)

Cheers Tom!
Stefan's site showed clearly what I was doing wrong, I'll get on with that tomorrow.
Hopefully my Agriline order will come too.
