Voltage regulator fitting

Post by 60dexta »

Hi All,
I have a 1960 Dexta. When I got it it did not have a proofmeter / rev counter.
I have now got one for it but it seems too long and would foul the connections on the voltage regulator. I have the type that is a bakelite housing with a clipped on lid and spade terminals.

Any clues as to whether this voltage regulator is the right one or is it one from a car of the period?

I think the voltage regulator is the wrong one looking in the manual. That shows a screw terminal one.
The one I have is a Lucas unit having numbers: B90 Service unit LRC105 37290 9 80 F

Rob,
I think it should look like this one. (http://www.fixthatford.com/index.php?ma ... ge&pID=971) with the screw terminals on the back.
My 1962 looks just like this one.

Well.. I got the correct voltage regulator....complete with its rubbish 'bend the wire around a bullet' type connectors.
After spending much of the day wrestling things inside the switch 'binacle' I got it all sorted.
The horn switch and key switch connections are rubbish too with screws right on the end of the wire.

I opened up the regulator and cleaned the points up and set the gaps as the manual says.
With it running the open voltage started off at next to nothing. I gave the adjustment screw half a turn. That brought the voltage up to 20 odd volts so I adjusted it down to 16.7v as the book says.
With the engine running it operated as it should but dissapointingly poor performance. It is producing about 6 amps at too many revs and the battery is fairly flat so it should be doing more than it is.

What a waste of time that was :x
I shall fit an alternator on the thing. At least then I will make some space inside the switch 'binacle' to work on things in there and it might also charge.

Much grumpyness

I feel your pain! Ive been trying to get my dexta to charge properly since I bought it last august.
I fitted a new regulator, then fitted a rebuild lucas dynamo....then realised the rubbish wiring loom I bought from a...l... had the terminals for the dynamo wired the wrong way round (so the dynamo field wire was actually the dynamo output wire and vise versa).
So after swapping the wires around it still didnt charge so I bought a new regulator again and it still doesnt charge! Im at my wits end now and considering just to fit an alternator instead.
Anyone with any advice please feel free to help.
Conar.
