Hi all

Thanks for the previous advice. I have now purchased replacement rear axles oil seals and brake shoes for my father in law's dexta.

I plan to go and see him in a few weeks to change these out.

Before then please can anyone advise the size of (the large) nuts that are used to retain the axle/bearing.

I beleieve from the downloaded manual that a special tool is usually required, however as I don't have one I would like to try and source a large box type spanner once I determine the size (unless I can actaully get large stilsons or similar to bear on the nut?)?

Please can anyone advice on how to loosen/tighten and/or what size 'across the flats' the nut is?

If its a Dexta it won't have nuts holding the axle bearing on. The nuts were introduced on the Super Dexta. The manual shows how to drill retaining collars and then a good smack with a cold chisel over the holes will split them.

I don't see much point in replacing the inner seal as this just seems to keep oil away from the bearing. While the bearing is packed with grease a bit of oil won't do it any harm.

I used the original trumpet housing gaskets cleaned up and with some master gasket. They need to be the correct thickness as the determines the clearance on the taper roller bearings in the diff head.

Many thanks for the tips, I think it may actually be a Super Ddexta so my question still stands (just in case) on the nut size.

I believe that the shafts have become 'ridged' (hence the leaks), and we plan to clean them and fill with metallic araldite, sand them down and then rebuild.

Hopefully (with new brake linings) this will make the machine much safer!!! As driving down hill with trailer and load with poor brakes is not for the feint hearted!!!

If the axle does have a groove worn in it check out a SKF product at your bearing supplier called Speedi-Sleeve. Or Google speedi sleeve.

I did my standard Dexta with Chicago Rawhide Speedi Sleeves

This tractor has same diam. axle at sealing surface
Need a piece of tube inside dia. 2.19" (55.5mm) length slightly longer then axle shaft to press sleeve in place. It is best to fit the sleeve with Loctite .
