Steering rockershaft oil seals.

Hi
I replaced my rockershaft oil seals some three years ago but still have a weep on the right hand side seal. The tractor is not a working tractor but is parked in its garage. I removed the seals and they look fine although I do recall that when I replaced them they slipped in quite easily. I have also taken a close look at the shaft which does not have a worn groove. How tight should these seals be around the shaft and can I use a sealer to hold the seal into the steering box housing?
Look forward to some advice thanks.
Mervyn

Hi Mervyn,
There should be no problem using a sealant on the outer casing, although the seals should be a press fit in the housing
Which oil are you using? With the high ambient temperatures in your part of the world you require to use a thicker oil.
Also have you checked for play in the brass bushes?
Best regards.
Gerald

Hello Gerald
Thanks for your promp reply. I used Castrol Manual EP 90 oil in the steering box, which is rather a thick oil. As for the brass bushes there is not much play, difficult to measure but the shaft slides in fairly smoothly.
Kind regards

Hi Mervyn, I don't recall the one's i fitted to mine been a slack fit, and they don't leak, But i wonder if (and it's only a thought) they were fitted with Metric measured seals instead of the correct imperial ones, A vernier gauge would tell you this,

Jim

Hi Jim
Thanks for your response. You are probably right as I did buy them locally and our measurement in South Africa is metric. I will give our branch of Sparex a call tomorrow and ask them the question, although I did not buy the current seals from them. If my mind serves me correctly it was a company called Bearings International. Does anyone perhaps have the seal diamensions that I can give to our suppiers?
Kind regards
Mervyn

Mervyn,
The seals are 1.3/4" od x 1.1/4" id x 3/8". If you have difficulty obtaining them in SA, send me a PM.
Gerald

The Sparex Part No. is S.41618

Good Morning Gerald
Thank you very much for the measurements and also the Sparex part number.

. I was able to speak to the Sparex sales person yesterday and he fortunately has the seals i'm looking for, I just have to plan a trip down to Durban to pick them up. I will be replacing both the seals just in case the originals are of a slightly bigger size. Jim, thanks again for your input much appreciated.
Kind regards
Mervyn

Hi I'm back with some good news sofar. I fitted the new seals from Sparex and they fitted nice and firmly with no leaks when I checked a moment ago, keep fingers crossed.
I have a problem with the steering nut which I would like some advice on but I shall start a new tread for that one.
Thanks once again for the advice earlier.
Kind regards
Mervyn
