Rear transmission swap

Hi
Has anyone swapped the rear transmission off an earlier dexta with one off a later model Super Dexta? Some years ago I put the same question up and Brian did respond that the pinion had to be replaced. My post was some 5 to 6 years ago and on the old forum, which I can't seem to find. I have removed both half shafts from these rear ends and the bearing from the older shaft 1959 is worn badly where as the shaft from the s/d is good 1963 plus it has the nut retainer

. The s/d rear has the diff lock as opposed to the dexta rear without the diff lock. Ideally I would like to have the diff lock option.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have just found my previous post on the rear transmission question nearly 5 years ago to the day

. Brian you suggested that one could swap the whole rear end which is something I was thinking about this week. The problem with that is the number of spline on the current rear end are 10 as apposed to the s/d rear end which has 14 splines. Is one able to buy a coupler with 14 spines that would match the splines on my dexta gear box or would that also have to be swapped out? Second option you made Brian was to swap the complete crown wheel and pinion, how difficult would that be to do, or would you suggest that I get a tractor mechanic/technician to do it?

If you have both couplers it is fearly easy to just cut them in two and weld two opposite back together. It is far less work than swap crownwheel and pinion. On top you get 10% higher top speed.

I did that on one of mine, it took me about half an hour

You have a choice Mervyn, both ways will work well. If you do not have a dif. lock though originally then the coupler welding is your best choice.

Hi Gentlemen, thanks very much for your responses, very good ideas. Unfortunately I do not have the s/d coupling

. I really do like that suggestion of welding the two halves together. Trying to find a coupling here in SA could be nearly impossible. I might have to see if I can get one through Sparex or try one of your wreakers over in the UK. If any member has a spare 14 spline coupler in their tool box please let me know.
Kinde regards

Mervyn,
I have a spare 14 spline coupling sleeve which you are quite welcome to. It weighs approx. 1.1 kgs. and to post it to you in S.A. will cost about £39.00 economy rate, delivery around 35 days.

Thank you very much Gerald thats good news. Yes the shipping will be expensive but if one is not available here in SA that will have to be the case. Gerald I did contact a tractor repairer/ breaker locally and he said he may have one, but just give him time to find it. I will keep you in mind pm you should I not be able to locate a coupling locally ie. between Johannesburg and Cape Town
Gerald thanks again for your offer, Bless you.
Kind regards
Mervyn

hello Gerald
Just a thought. Why don't you cut it in half and send it. That will be almost half the weight

"You are so sharp Dexta Roadless", as Gerald said not a bad idea at all. I still have not had much luck this side yet, although I have not had much time to phone around.
Kind regards

Mervyn,
It is sat on my bench, just say the word and it will be in the post to you. I can soon cut it in half to reduce the weight if required.

Hi Gerald, thanks again for your offer to cut that coupling in half which is a good idea. I still have to follow up on a verbal offer I had from someone who farms close to me. Should the former not happen what is the best form of payment to you?
Kind regards.

Hi Gerald
Not sure whether you received my PM this morning? In it, I suggested we do not cut the coupling as I noticed that I have a 2nd gearbox with a 14 spline gear. Not sure what is wrong with the box, I need to investigate. Still waiting for my farmer friend to get back to me on the coupling he said he may have.

Hi Gerald
Please can I take up your offer on the 14 spline coupling we discussed some time ago. I am sorry I have taken so long to get back to you. In November I had to undergo a second total hip replacement which is taking its time to heal, but I feel I want to get on with my project. I will pm you my postal details if you can help me.
Thank you
Mervyn

Further to my PM to you, it would appear that the cost is the same for a whole sleeve as for half of one.
I will go ahead and book the courier to collect it on Monday, you should have it within three to five days. I will sort the money out later.

Hi Gerald
I received your coupling today thank you very much. That was really speedy delivery, picked up on 16 May and arrived in my city on 21 May. I was not at home to receive the parcel so they delivered it to my place of work today. The s/dexta rearend has been stripped and going off tomorrow to be sand blasted etc. then I will need to remove the inners from my current rearend in prep for the replant.
