Whilst refurbing my air cleaner and I noticed that by blowing into the top with my hand over the outlet, there is a significant leak of air around where the oil bowl joins the main body.

Is this usual? I've cleaned up both halves and there is no obvious damage, just not a brilliant fit. To confirm my diagnosis, I stuck some sellotape around it and the leak was much less. All original parts, so I can't blame India!

Doesn't appear to be desirable as air will leak in here by-passing the oil bath.
Perhaps one just gives it a good smear of thick grease before assembling to help block up the gaps?
Any comments appreciated

Have you got the removable filter in that goes between the oil bowl and the air cleaner body?
Once you get the clamp on 75% of the gap will be filled in anyway,and what little dust etc does get in will drop into the oil bath.

Yes I have the original removable filter in place.Yes I tried with the clamp on as well and it didn't make a huge difference.
Maybe a couple of gaskets either side of the removable filter would improve the air tightness.

Instead of a gasket why not try using some self amalgamating tape availble from most electrical stores? It's usually about 1/2" wide and one and a bit times around the joint would form an effective seal. It basically cures onto itself forming a good seal for cables entering junction boxes etc outside. I've used it to go around the edge of headlight glass to make a rattle free seal.
