Oil in cylinder(s) and from exhaust

When trying to start the engine I seem to have some hydraulic lock (oil in cylinder), it’s very hard to turn over. When the engine does turn over and starts(needs a very good battery) it blast out a lot of oil from the exhaust, enough to cover me and the tractor plus surrounding area. Once this has happened the tractor runs fine and starts easy. This has only just started to happen. The tractor is always barn stored, it doesn’t do a lot of hard work. I have a tap on the inlet manifold which is off. Could oil drain from the cylinder head when stopped?.Could it be leaking injectors?.

Bigmax..
Hi, I am thinking you hav bad piston and rings, mybee sleeves too, so the best thing to do is open up the engine for check, measure, overhaul, motor and head.

Hi Bigmax,

Are you sure it is oil? If it is, it is most likely to be diesel from your preheater. Maybe the tap is leaking. I can't see enough diesel leaking past the injector pump and through the injector and still have the engine running on all cylinders when it starts. The other possibility is that it is water from a blown head gasket. Water tends to get very black and oily looking going through the exhaust on a diesel engine and it can be hard to tell the difference.

Two checks I would do is check the radiator and see if it is blowing bubbles when it is running. Bubbles means head gasket or cylinder head cracks. The second is disconnect the preheater pipe and see if it is leaking.

I hope for your sake it is a leaking tap.

Regards, Frank.

i would say that it is lack of hard work, probley nothing major is wrong,
this problem does come up from time to time answer seems to be
a good days hard work , on a plough if possible , what type of engine oil do you use,
a change to stright 30w might also help if you dont already use this , Gerry

Thanks for replies. I checked the tap only to find someone had turned it on. I was sure it was off because I never use the pump, only a bit of heat now and then. Sorry for being a fool, I hope this cures my problem, it pays to check and check again.
