Mineral engine oil for rear axle.

I've seen it mentioned that you can use a mineral engine oil for the rear axle and hydraulic system of older tractors.
I'm currently overhauling the hydraulic system and I don't have the option of buying universal tractor oil in France, or anything more specialist. It's either hydraulic fluid for modern machinery which is VERY expensive here and from what I've read can be damaging, or bog standard engine oil.
Is engine oil acceptable? If so, what grades?
