Hi
Any of you recently cut new gaskets to fit between rear axle housing and transmission box? Please tell me what thickness jointing material you used. Secondly would it be advisible to use just gasket maker from a tube? I have searched the internet hoping to find some ready made up but absolutly nothing.

Hi Mervyn,
It is good practice to use the thinnest gasket possible, if the mating surfaces are in good condition you could probably use one of the instant in a tube gaskets. However if you can get hold of some thin cardboard (similar to a corn flakes packet) or strong paper I would use that. Sparex do a set of gaskets for the gearbox which I think will fit the garbox to rear axle flanges.

Hi Gerald
I was hoping you would come to my assistance

. Thanks for your advice. I have used an oil resistant jointing material of 0.4mm and 0.8mm(no idea what the thickness would be in thou) for my gaskets between the gearbox and clutch housing and gearbox and rear transmission some years ago, before my crazy idea of changing the rear end. What I believe is available locally is 0.25,0.4 and 0.8mm flexoid oil resistant jointing. As you suggested using the thinnest available I will see if I can buy some 0.25mm jointing mat. I was also a little concerned on bearing loading if I used too thick a material. Getting back to the earlier gaskets I made up, I also used a thin film of gasket sealer on the mating surfaces to make sure I did not have and leaks, which touch wood none have come to light. I did however cut myself a gasket for the rear axle housing some weeks ago but I was not happy with the result, my jointing material is rather old and cracked very easily, easpecially where I punched the holes for the bolts.

. Otherwise progress is slow with my swap.

Mervyn,
Gasket material 0.25 mm is equivalent to 0.010" and will be suitable.
You don't have to worry about bearing loading as the final drive and the PTO are driven through sliding couplings.
