Hi my mate has a fordson dexta:
Can anyone tell me where the wire from the plunger (Sorry Guys) it has a ball bearing in the end and is PUSHED by the START Lever: it has 2 wires coming from it to the Regulator, WHICH part of the Regulator does it go to, or which part of the switch, I have put all the wires etc to the SWITCH and REGULATOR TRACED them, but that wire gets red hot when the lever is pushed down.. PLEASE be Gentle guys, I am only trying to help, it had been nibbled at before I got to it.
Colin.

red wire goes to starter and yellow to batt. connection on ignition switch. You can download wiring diagram from the net, just go into dexta wiring diagram :)

Thanks for the REPLY Brian,
Lol, wires are different colours mate.lol.
Yes I have downloaded the wiring diagram but somebody has changed some of the wires:
The one that is available is YELLOW going to the regulator?..
So if you can point me which wire by being TRACED to which part of the switch and battery:
it does SAY BATT on the SWITCH is that where it goes??.
Thanks in advance mate:

sorry! cock up . both wires are red, one goes to solenoid, one goes to heater switch. you will see this on diagram

back again. I'm assuming you mean the wires coming from the switch on top of the starter :?

Hi Again mate thanks for the reply:
No the wires go from the SOLENIOD to the manual LEVER which depresses another SWITCH that has a bullbearing on the end, it then has 2 wires which go to the STARTER: if I remember correctly one is a thick wire and is coloured YELLOW:
if I knew what to cal this switch between the SOLENIOD and STARTER I could probably make more sense:
He is away for a few days so I do not have access to the tractor:
Hoping for a favourable reply, Thanks once again;

Colin.
Let's make this a wee bit easier. We'll call the switch on top of the starter that's actuated by the start lever the Start Switch.
The Start Switch is just that. A switch. Electricity will flow either direction thru it. So it makes no difference which wire is on which terminal on the Start Switch. It connects both ways.
The purpose of the Start Switch is to supply voltage to the solenoid. The solenoid is also also a switch.( A heavy duty switch ) But it is actuated by electricity passing thru the Starter Switch to the coil in the solenoid. The small terminal on the solenoid is where one of the wires from the Start Switch must go. This small terminal is one side of the coil built into the solenoid. By applying power to the coil, it becomes an electromagnet which lifts the internal plunger that has contacts on it. These contacts close the circuit from your battery to your starter motor.
Now you need positive power to the other terminal on the Start Switch. This can be picked up anywhere it is available. The schematic shows it coming from the Manifold Heater Switch switch. But you could pick it up from the positive side of the key switch, heater button, horn button or even the large terminal on the solenoid that has your battery power connected to it.
So in short. Positive power flows thru the Start Switch to the solenoid coil. Which in turn closes the internal switch connecting the battery to the starter motor. Tractor starts
Sounds like your original connection might have been a short circuit. Which would explain why the wire got so hot.
Hope this isn't too confusing :scratchhead:

Hello Mate, yes that is EXACTLY what it was showing a dead short I think:
So the wire going to the SOLENOID (SMALL ONE) third connection it shows in the middle in the diagram, just bridges the SOLENOID to let the Main Power flow through it: (RIGHT)?.. Soooo, I can get power for the SOLENOID when the key is turned, which is connected to
a wire coming off the SWITCH: (LIVE) that is: it is confusing when it is NEGATIVE EARTH: Will wait to see if I have this before messing with it when my mate gets back.lol. if anything is WRONG with my thinking can you please Bear with me, it is very good of you mate:
I must admit at the moment there is NOT a CONNECTION to the SMALL connector on the SOLENOID:
But obviously if there is a connection that is giving me a short I have not found it, I have almost rewired the darn thing by checking all the wires which go from the regulator, Horn works, Lights work, etc its just the STARTER side..
You are a BRICK mate please be patient with me, I won`t to see my mates face when it turns over.lol. come to think of it MINE as well:::
Thank you mate: Colin:

Colin,
Not sure I understand your reply completely.
So I'm saying:
The large cable from your battery bridges the solenoid to power your starter when the solenoid is actuated.
The small wire marked as Red on the schematic comes from the Starter Switch on top of the starter to actuate the solenoid.
The wire marked as yellow on the schematic attaches to the the large lead coming from your battery at the solenoid.
This wire (yellow) actually carries the power from your battery to feed the light switch.
Sometimes language across the "Pond" gets a little confusing. :D

colin is telling you exactly what I said. it,s self explanitary on the diagram, there is a heavy duty cable for the solenoid to the starter, this originates from the battery. two red wires on the starter switch one comes from the other side of the solenoid and one comes from  the heater switch

It is very hard Brian when you are THICK, I think its all throwing me a WOBBLY because of the NEGATIVE EARTH
Connections as you they say are worth a Thousand pictures :scratchhead:
Will view this again BUT,,, no red wires and the SOLENOID has 3 connections

Colin,
The actual color of the wires on the tractor are irrelevant. I only referenced the colors so you could follow them on the schematic. They could be any color if wiring has been replaced. You just need to establish that they go between the proper points.

Solenoid:
if you have 3 terminals,
2 should be large .
1 large terminal connects to the battery
1 large terminal connects to the starter
small terminal connects to Starter Switch
If you have 4 terminals (2 large and 2 small ) same as above but the 4th (2nd small terminal) is connected to earth.
If your tractor has negative earth: Just change the plus and minus on the schematic drawing battery. Not on the actual battery.
All wiring all remains the same as shown in the schematic.
