Metal filter assembly to the hydraulic pump

Metal filter assembly which is attached to the hyd. pump inside the box. I presume because it is partially submerced in oil the pump draws oil through the filter and into the pump etc. I started cleaning all the muck from inside the filter and noticed a small +- 3mm diameter hole in the gauze at the outlet to the pump

. I feel it is pointless putting it back with that defect. Any suggestions on how to patch it up besides buying a replacement. I thought of a blob of varnish or paint, but not sure how the oil temp will affect it, or better still some gasket sealer/maker.

Any idea what a replacement would cost?
Regards
Mervyn

Mervyn,
It isn't the cost of the filter that matters so much as the cost of sending it to you.
I suggest that you repair the hole with a suitable nut and bolt and a couple of washers, which will be far cheaper than me sending you a replacement filter which you are welcome to if you really need it.
Gerald.

Thank you for your opinion sounds good enough to try it out. The filter was rather filthy although having soaked it in petrol for a few days it still seem to have some scale in the gause, would paraffin be more successful?

Hi Gerald
I did what you suggested with a screw and nut and two washers, I definately could have done with a second pair of hands but I persevered sweat running all over with a 36 degree day and 60 watt lamp in you face, it looks good, thank you.

I filled the filter with some paint stripper and let it for about an hour then washed it out thouroughly and it also now looks super clean.

Thanks you also for offering me one of your filters, most kind of you.
PS. Gerald, please can you confirm for me whether the bottom of the filter is left open or is there something missing on mine. There is a little flange on the bottom with a tiny hole through it, maybe something should be attached to it
Kind regards
Mervyn

Mervyn,
I think that you will find that the hole is threaded so that the filter can be bolted to the side of the axle casing, with a bolt and sealing washer passing through from the outside.
Your working conditions remind me of what we used to experience down in the engine room sailing through the Red Sea or off the Cape!
