Oil Filter

Changing my oil. Filter head looks like this



and checking my filter bowl innards, which look like


All seems to be complete with the following parts, from left to right (bottom to top on the tractor):
Central bolt head at bottom
Conical rubber washer (below the bowl)
Bowl
Conical spring, broad end next to bowl
Metal washer
Felt washer, (which fits into the bottom of the Top Hat washer)
Top Hat washer (metal)
Rubber washer (fits into grove on upper side of top hat washer)
Filter cartidge

Looking at the underside of the filter head, there are two rubber washers, one large diameter around the perimeter, one smaller the same as the washer in the top hat.

Pretty sure my rubber washers are all original 52yrs old, and hard as hobs.

Q: where can I get replacement rubber washers, particularly the conical washer at the bottom, and the top hat washer?

Or do I make my own?

Or naughty thought, replace the whole lot with a Spin-on Filter?

From what I understand it is not that uncommon for this type of filter to leak. I have an 850 Ford also and I've had that one leak.

From what I've read on here, it's usually the perimeter seal at the top that leaks. Many are too narrow and deform in the groove in the head, often after a period of time, rather than immediately - just what you don't want!

I can feel a spin-on coming along!

Interestingly Wix website indiates the two smaller rubber washers, as well as the bigger perimeter washer, are supplied with the Wix 51188 filter.

Some of the proprietary Filter manufacturers include replacement seals with the filter. The replacement oil filter element is a Fram CH813PL , the fuel filter element is a Fram C11846PL. Your local Motor Factor should be able to obtain these filters or equivalent filters for you. Or you could try Ford New Holland.

However if you are going to work the tractor I would go for a spin off type, they are cleaner and easier to change. The filter head is available from Sparex, I'll find the number for you if you are interested.

Hi, yes I'm coming round to the idea of a spin-on (off!) filter and understand one for a Massey MF35 will fit (see my recent thread on spin-on filter) and see them on the web, interestingly not advertised as applicable to the Dexta. I think they do a better job, finer filtration, and maybe anti-drain & bypass valves. If you have any advice on a suitable spin on filter, it would be great if you could reply on the other thread!

Ref filters, for what it's worth, the best (US) makes are said to be K&N, NAPA/WIX, Purolator. Fram doesn't seem to be up there.
