Chaps,
I have a contact in the US who is looking for a starter for a petrol Dexta with a Standard Industrial engine.. These are an inertia starter but because of the size of the flywheel, it has a very long shaft for the bendix.
The engine was used on Massey balers and other industrial applications as well as the Dexta.
Post here or e-mail me if you can be of help.

I think a starter from a 12v Ferguson or pp35 engine would fit also if I remember correctly even a starter from a mini will fit with a little bit of fiddling.

That is the problem, the Fergy starters are not the same, the petrol Dexta bendix shaft is about twice the length of the Fergy ones. The flywheel on the petrol is huge.
I have never come across one this long. If it was just the starter barrel and windings and even the end plates the Fergy ones would match up but not the internal windings and shaft.
You can see from this scan although it is not shown clearly that the bendix shaft is about the same length as the starter body.

Blimey thats a heck of an overhang Brian, never seen anything like that.
Is it the case that he has got one with faulty electrics, in which case a competent motor shop ought to be able to press the old shaft out and into an alternative motor rotor, or if he hasn't an old one for a pattern then its a trip to Lucas (or whoever supplied) archive to find the spec
If its a standard Bendix on a long shaft he could have an extension made up and TIG or loctite onto a standard shaft, the extra diameter would appear to be well behind the flywheel so probably clearance for it ??
HTH Failing that
