Bubbles on side of engine

While generally inspecting my Dexta before shutting it down today I noticed some bubbles on the Right Hand side of the engine underneath the inlet manifold and a run of black liquid. I also noticed that when I put my finger over the end of the breather pipe the amount of black liquid running out increased.
The engine runs very nicely, does not breath or smoke although in the at -6 deg C recently it generally took 4 goes to start.
I have attached a photo of the area - to me it looks as though this might be leakage from the head gasket although I would have thought it strange that the leakage would be outwards.
Any thoughts on this?

I had the same problem with one of my Trader engines and I retightend the head bolts with the recommended torque and it stop leaking.
You have to open the bolts 90 degrees before retighten one at the time and in the specific order. Do not overtight them.

Reading the manual it mentions a special deep socket (T6095) for the cylinder head bolts - is this necessary?

Hi Andy,
Yes you do need a long reach socket for some of the cylinder head nuts, from memory the studs also hold the injectors in place and the rocker cover. A friend made one up for me but you can buy long reach sockets individually.

When refitting the injectors after retorquing the cylinder head bolts do I need to use new copper washers?
Also there would seem to be a high chance of letting bits into the bores when taking out the injectors and if necessary fishing out copper washers - any advice.
Apologies for the rather basic questions but I have no experience working on engines and want to be prepared before I start.

Update on head gasket leak

Just thought I'd post an update -
I began by trying to retorque the head bolts but the first nut stripped at only 50lbft torque.
Then I noticed that the stud thread did not protrude all the way through the nuts on all the bolts underneath the rocker cover, at which point i realised the head had to come off anyway.
Once the head was off the reason for the studs not going all the way through the nuts became clear - they had been put in upside down with the end with the longer thread into the block.
I'm going to get the head checked for flatness tomorrow as a precaution.
The waterways look fairly blocked with rust - any suggestions on good ways to clean them?

Perhaps several flushes with radiator flush, eg Holts from Halfords. See also Stefan's site for info how he cleaned his waterways, p18

Andy, you can anneal the washers and reuse them.
