Super Dexta battery support/hold down.

Post by Mervyn Spencer »

Hi, please I need some advice on how the Super Dexta battery support/hold down secures to the fire wall and battery tray if that is the case, thank you.
Mervyn.

You should have a frame that sits around the top of the battery. That is held in place by three long bolts with a 'flat hook' on the end which hook onto the edge of the battery tray.

I refer you to the parts books, unfortunately can't help more as we're missing it too. Hopefully not for long. The flat hook part no. 957E-5155 actually hooks onto the fuel tank bracket. Only one, the other two are short and not flat and hook onto the firewall (part no.957E-5164). The thread is 1/4" UNF. The clamp is 957E-5165C from August 59. Before then the wee hooks were part of the firewall and the clamp was 957E-5165. Twin batteries were used on some tractors from March 58, using 957E-5165B at the normal location and E83-NA-9, E97-NA-9 and E98-NA-9 added in on the LH footplate tray E82-NA-9, those also have a cover 957E-10666 to keep the battery clean.

Hi,

This might help, or it my not. I had difficulty trying to source the battery holder for my Dexta.

But I did use the battery holder from a Ford 2000/3000 it looked identical to the original style.

I had to modify the 3 hooks a little to enable a good hold on the bottom try alright. Nothing a bench vice and spray paint couldn’t fix.

Looks good, but not suitable as an original look alike. The battery you have there is too short and too low, and the front hooks fix into the grooves in the firewall.

My attempt is more of a make shift job ha. Can you still get an original size battery out of curiosity?

Hi Gents, thank you for sharing your ideas and experiences. Unfortunately in my experience the batteries these days are different measurements. For example my Willard 650-15 which is a 90 amp battery measures 305mm width and 172 back to front, I have a Super Dexta Firewall. The hold downs that are available online are for the Dexta measure 302mm x 172mm. I like the version of Hear Bear where he states that there are three long bolts that clamp under the battery tray, that sounds correct for the Super Dexta? However its the lugs on the top frame that is the mystery. I do have a universal clamp that I have used but its always good to be authentic.

I've been looking around but struggled to find much, the best ones are ok except that they're low. The original is 12 1/2" long, 6 7/8" wide and 9 31/32" high (not including poles). The closest ones I can find are a fairly good match except for height:
315 mm long 175 mm wide 175 mm high needs 3" spacer
315 mm long 175 mm wide 190 mm high needs 2 1/2" spacer
305 mm long 175 mm wide 205 mm high needs 1 7/8" spacer, a bit short but should be fine as long as it's put towards the solenoid.
Can't really help much more, there is an old style Bosch battery but it too needs a spacer. All should have the negative pole as close to the solenoid as possible, or the lead won't reach, therefore the negative pole should be on the rear RH corner. Not applicable to negative earth or non original leads. Sounds like the repro clamps are not to spec as so many things.

Just to be clear, I haven't got a Dexta here at the moment to refer to. I know the top frame has 3 points for hold down bolts but we currently don't have the bolts. From looking at what bolts were available logic suggested it would be reasonable to assume they simply went to the battery tray - obviously not.
I'm now second guessing what I need, it'll have to wait a couple of weeks until I get to it next.

Thanks again Gent's for your responses. I might just have to resort to my universal bracket :| .
