Radial Tyres

Is anyone using Semperit radials? These seem to be the cheapest available. I'm told radials may be worthwhile if you're doing a lot of land work as they have better grip.
Also I'm told that standard Dexta rims are not suitable for tubeless tyres. Can 'tubeless' tyres be used with inner tubes?
Your advice appreciated
Thanks,
Ben

I do not have Semperit but I can reply on your other question :
Can 'tubeless' tyres be used with inner tubes? YES

Jos,
Is it correct that Dexta rims are not suitable for tubeless tyres?
Are you using tubes in your radials?
Thanks for your advice.

Thought you were looking for the best and most cost effective tyre Ben. Sounds like you have money to burn.
You should not put a tube in a tubeless tyre. That is the advice of tyre installers. The tyre has internal ribbing and with the extra flex in the tyre walls these will chafe the tube.
If you use a tube and get a problem that causes an accident, I would not like to be in your shoes with the HSE.
I have been through all these questions only this week because we have been getting punctures due to hedge cutting and was looking for the best solution.

Not really.
I've found Semperit radials for £200 ex VAT delivered (Agri-Tyres, Newmarket - has anyone used them?), ~£50 more than BKT/Supreme/Vredestein X-ply.
However, it seems that radials may not be an option for standard Dexta rims, as my local engineer tells me that they are not suitable for tubeless tyres (I'm unclear why), and you tell me not to put tubes in them! There don't seem to be any tubed radials.
I'm sure all will become clear in time!

What solution did you arrive at?
Thanks again,

Ben,
In my post to your first question I said that, rims were not made to close enough tolerances to accept radial tyre and we had problems with tyres slipping on the rim.
The rims therefore will not seal to allow tubeless tyres to be used. If you fitted a tubeless tyre to the rim and got "creep", the tyre could instantly deflate causing an accident if you were on the road or on a hillside. Any side thrust could move the tyre off the rim.
We had them leave the rim and cut valves off not once but many time. They were jacked off the rim by dirt buildup when ploughing. These were proper tubed radial tyres.
We had the tyre people on permanent standby for one customer until we bought the tyres back and fitted cross ply.
I spent hours on the phone to Kleiber who made the tyres and the answer was always the same. The rims were not made to a close enough tolerance.
Rims for radials?

Thanks for reminding me.
Are there any rims available today for our tractors that are suitable for radials, or should I conclude that X-ply tyres are the only safe option?
Thanks again,
Ben

Ben, just use X- ply tyres because thats the tyre the Dexta was designed to use. For the additional cost of using radials, is not justified unless the work you have for your Dexta requires minimum slipage under maximum load. Plus the money you save can be spent on doing other R and M on your Dexta.

And just to add to my confusion, Welshman Evan Watkins became 2008 World Champion in Grassland Ploughing using Continental X-ply tyres!

Hi all,
I have treated my Dexta to a new set of rear tyres in the last week. The previous set were Pirelli Radial 13.6x28, the new set are 12.4x28 (£300 including tubes and vat) and look very nice. Had her out at our local Vintage rally last weekend the first show of many this year.

Barry,
Is that £300 all in for the pair? £150 for radials is cheap..! Are they Pirellis? Where did you get them?
All the best,
Ben

Ben,
It's probably the way I wrote it down, but the new tyres are not Radial and are not Pirelli. They are standard cross ply tyres made in Turkey, they look good and do the job so why pay twice as much for the branded names. Yes £300 including tubes and Vat, bought at a local tyre dealer.

BarryT
By the way Ben how did you get on with Llew Edwards at North Wales Engines??

Barry,
What brand are they?

Very well thanks. They rebuilt my engine top & bottom. It was in poor state with siezed pistons but fortunately there's no frost damage. Cost was just over £1k. Of course I've not run it yet so the proof is yet to come.
It's now been cleaned and painted by Cleaning-Consultants (Blastcleaner on here who happens to have a Dexta

). I'll be posting pics on my bensdexta 3 thread shortly.
All the best,
Ben

Ben,
Barry,
What brand are they?
If they are made in Turkey, chances are they are
'Petlas' brand.
Same as they fitted to my Major and I can't find 'fault' with them.

Ben,
I will check tomorrow what brand they are.
Mike, they are not Petlas but very simmilar, I've also got Petlas on my Major and you are correct I cannot fault them either.

BarryT
