Temperature Sender

Hello all,

Bit of advice if I may- temp guage wasn't reading on my 4000, so disconnected the wire and shorted it to earth and this sent it steadily into the red so diagnosed a faulty sender unit. I ordered one from Agriline but this climbed to the red with the water and engine only lukewarm after running at 1800rpm for about 5 minutes from cold. I assumed the sender unit to be faulty and agriline very kindly supplied another. However have just fitted it with exactly the same symptoms. Surely not another faulty sender unit or is there something obvious that I'm missing here? The wire doesn't short to ground, hasn't chafed through and when disconnected the guage drops back to its resting point. Coolant level is fulland did not drain prior to swapping units.

Any suggestions?

I dont have the answer for you but will be interested in replies as my county 954 does the same thing, and I know its not the thermostat,it does not boil / push water, and the rad heats like it should with a good flow top and bottom. I have heard there is resistors in the dash panel but don't know what they do, or maybe the gauge is faulty.
Hopefully one of the ford guys can solve both our problems :)

This might not solve your problem, but from "past experience" :eyes: with temperature guage sender units, I would suggest purchasing a genuine CNH/New Holland sender unit, part number C4AH10884A.See if that makes a difference :mrgreen: TSG.

Good advice and taken on board thank you. I did actually order a genuine one yesterday after posting this so will see if that resolves that issue. Unfortunately I think that the problems might be greater than a sender unit as last thing yesterday I ran the machine up again and the block/ water got very hot very quickly (10 mins running flat out), pulled the dipstick out to find the oil a horrible silvery colour and the coolant level dropped. I'm assuming porous block :(

Hi,

Senders need to be matched to gauges. Even though the sender may look the same it could have a completely different resistance vs temperature curve. The other possibility is that the temperature gauge is the type that needs a voltage stabilizer as part of it's circuit and the voltage stabilizer has failed.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it is the gauge that is not reading right and not a much bigger engine problem.

Hi Frank,

Fingers crossed- I looked again at the oil this morning after the initial disappointment of the colour yesterday and it didn't actually seem that bad, and certainly hadn't got any worse overnight (?) So will fit the genuine sender unit, a replacement thermostat and voltage regulator and go from there- if the heating still persists then wil pressurise the radiator with the sump off and see if I can spy any leaks

Hi Kev, Yes it was a case of a non genuine part giving me false readings! I checked the running temp with one of those infrared thermometers and everything was fine. Genuine one installed and the tractor is now fine and going like a train, even if struggling a little in all the mud we have here in somerset after the recent flooding :D

Is this because the genuine Ford sender is matced to the guage? :scratchhead:

Hi, Have you tried changing the voltage stabilizer on the rear of your dash panel

From my experience by useing a CNH sender unit rather than an aftermarket brand is that if the fault persists,then the fault is not the sender unit,it will be the voltage regulator, voltage stabiliser, guage or a wireing fault. As for "past experience",many years ago, in a distant country far away, I was working on a MK 4 Escort that was "overheating", fault diagnosed as faulty sender unit, replaced the sender unit with a new one but the wrong colour :stress: :stress: :stress: :yeah: As I learnt,different coloured sender units have different resistances, replaced the sender unit with a new one with the correct resistance, problem solved. :eyes: TSG.
