Tyre valve evolution (water type)

Post by Billy26F5 »

I'm sure many of you will know that there are two types of water tyre valve, one was used when Fordson's were in production, it was later replaced with the current type. Here are pics and the TRA numbers:

TR-218

TR-218A
Both of these are for vulcanising onto a tube. There are also screw on versions of both, haven't found any of the old type available but there are new ones, the pic of the old one is of what I think is Davie's original one:

The valve cores are both available, below are the two made these days with TRA numbers, on Davie's valve you can see an original one of Billy's:

These pages are here for the pics, can't say about the companies or the actual parts yet.
I hope someone will know when the changeover happened, in the 60's all valves appear to be the old type, but by September 78 I have an Ebro manual with the new TRA number but the old type in the illustrations. I've been looking around for ages with no success at finding the rough changeover date, but I belive it might have coincided with the introduction of radial tractor tyres with the huge increase in pressure that brought in as Brian mentions in a story of his. Really keen to find out about this to know what valves each of our vehicles should have.
