Fordson Major

Post by 32hyb »

:? Hi There Im new to this forum I have a mates tractor who let me borrow it only to find out it main crankshaft pulley has a section missing from it ,hence no water pump drive etc .
It has a f/end loader fitted to so it has a shaft bolted to the front of it to drive the hydralic pump. My question is i dont know the model of it ,I only have the engine number of which is 1413622.
Where would be the best place to source this pulley to get the old girl back working.

UpDate Well I have the pulley off and are now faced with what I thought would be a nut to undo to take pulley off . WRONG
I have also since found out it a Farmrite Diesel built some time 1954/55.
Question there is obviously a special tool as what im looking at is a flat faced what looks like a nut with two holes in it must be locating poits for the special Tool me thinks .
Any Ideas Please.

IF 1413622 is the original engine it is a FMD (Fordson Major Diesel) built January 1957. There are casting codes on every cast part of the tractor that can confirm or reject that hypothesis. The easiest casting code to find is just above the transmission filler plug near the clutch linkage.

Post it here and someone can give you a confirmation.

Hi Allan.

My tractor number is 1415835 so a bit after yours but still Jan 1957. Your casting codes should start and end with "A" with two numbers in between indicating the actual day .
The first "A" represents January and the second "A" indicates 1957
For example my engine casting code is A18A indictating 18th Jan 1957 and my gearbox casting code is A24A.

The casting codes help to show that the tractor still comprises most of the original bits.

Hope that this helps

Regards

Laurie

Yes. you will need a hamonic balance puller. Measure the distance between the two threaded holes and be sure you get one that is wide enough. These pullers are slotted, so they fit a range of pulleys. These can be picked up in any auto parts store, or ask your mechanic friends, they may let you borrow one. Dandy Dave!

Hi dave well it seems we were both wrong once I removed drive pulley that was held onto the face of the actual cranck shaft pulley by three allen head set screws it exposed not a nut as we both thought but a flat faced headed retaining bolt that had two internal 5/16 dowel points to take a special tool.
Therewas no internal thread that indicated that l would need a puller of any type.
I made up a tool similar to the one that would be used to undo a disc off a grinder or friction cutter.
Anyway this proved that I could bend 3/8 bolts easily ,so at the end of my teather I opted for a blut chisel with one hard knock it unscrewed by hand and the pulley slip off with a gentle tap from behind.
Took a few hours but all worked out thanks to you all for your input all I have to do know is source a new pulley .
Thanks again.
