Front Crankshaft Seal

I have to replace the front crankshaft seal on my Power Major. I have checked in the Repair Manual and it recommends that you pull the front end of the tractor off to get access to the crankshaft and timing cover.

Is this the best way to replace the seal or is there an easier way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there, I have to do exactly the same job this weekend on a super major engine, I too read the manual, and thought you probably wouldnt need to take the side rails etc off, just remove the radiator? Unless you need a puller on the crank pulley?
We need brians advice I think, he will know the best way to do it!

I have done the job and use this way. It's the easy way to do it. You can remove the radiator, but then the tombstone is still a bit in the way. I have made some connectors in the wiring from the headlights so when I have to remove the front again I can disconnect them easy. It’s eight bolts and a pin in the triangle.

Would you please give me the size of your seal and the year of your major. There are two sizes. Be sure to check it first.

Thanks Henk for your reply. It sounds like it will be easier to take the front off the tractor than I thought.

I am not sure what size the crankshaft seal is, but the tractor is a 1959 Power Major with the Mk 2 engine.

You have to drain the coolant, but that was also the case when you remove the radiator.
Put a support under the PTO box and use the handbrake. Then she will stand like a house and you can wheel the front of.
I removed the steering rod of the arm at the box. So I could use it to block the wheels from turning.
