Muffler Specs

Post by kingfisher61 »

As per a previous post, I have a power major 4 cylinder diesel mounted in a paddlewheeler (boat). The muffler has rusted out & needs to be replaced. The whole exhaust is very modified with the pipe running about 2 metres horizontally & then about 2 metres vertically to exit through the roof of the boat. On top of this was mounted a muffler - vertically. It's been there about 15 years, but I suspect it was the wrong sort as the flange at the top retained rainwater which rusted out the end of the muffler. I expect it was designed for horizontal use on a truck.
So, the question is, if I go to my local muffler shop, what do I ask for? Is it as simple as "a diesel muffler to mount vertically on a 2" pipe"? Or is there more to it?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Did not see you on the Murray when we were over. :D

I would go with any silencer that has the same size pipe inlet/outlet as your extension system. As long as it is a "straight through" I would not expect any problems.

Thanks Brian,
I was here. Where were you?
Interesting that you say a straight through muffler. The previous one wasn't. And it was very heavily choked with black "soot" I wonder if this has been building up and slowly choking the system. If so this may explain the increasing amount of smoke from the exhaust as the engine laboured against the blockage.
I'm not sure how sound this logic is but I guess I'll find out when I start her up next.
