Lots of questions

Post by naildriver »

I've been asking lots of questions, Most, I would eventually figure out, but since I'm just trying to get the motor started, I don't need to understand everything about the wiring. I'll figure that out later when I rewire everything since nothing worth saving. My question; I think that I am ready to start after 2.5 years of setting in my garage. [with the exception of oil for injector pump question in another thread]. I should be able to "jump" start this thing, correct??? Ground cable from neg batt to frame and hot [red] to which post on starter?? So can I do it this way and which post on back of starter? Many thanks

See original Dexta wiring diagram downloadable from www.fordson-dexta.de.
Workshop Manual Section 9 towards the end.
All the best

I jump started mine for a couple of months while restoring and before rewiring. Found it handy to be able to move it under its own power.

The tractor is likely negative earth. I used the existing wiring to the solenoid except the small wire which goes to the ign switch, and the wire from one of the large soilenoid posts which supplies power to the dash, both of which I disconnected. I made up a smaller lead (small enough to keep in my pocket) with crocodile clips to connect the battery to the glow plug when starting. I found that without the glow plug (a full 40 seconds and a squirt of fuel from the primer) there is almost zero chance of the engine starting from cold. After 40 seconds I uncliped this from the glow plug and touched it to the small terminal on the solenoid to activate the starter. Dont forget to remove it from the battery after starting as it is still live. In effect this creates a a limited wiring loom which only included the solenoid, starter, and glow plug.

Be dam sure the tractor is in nuetral when starting like this or it will run you over!!!!! Rock it back and forward to be sure.
