My new dexta

Post by Nick »

Hello everyone, got my freshly hedge pulled dexta home today.
Got a load of questions for you.........
Where abouts do i look to find the casting codes/engine code?
How does the glow plug mechanism work?
Do the injectors just pull straight out after undoing the two nuts?
Can you replace the liners while the engine is in the machine (if i need too)?
Are dexta's live drive or just single clutch?

The engine is seized from standing as i think some water got down the exhaust (its been in a hedge for 12 years). It has a front loader which im going to take off, may use it, but not sure yet.
Hopefully, pictures to follow....
Oh yay, look, another seized bolt! Lets get a hammer.....and some kano.....and some cider!

Welcome, here are the answers I can help with.

Check the area between the two core plugs behind the injector pump for cracks......

How does the glow plug mechanism work? - Its a heater plus a fuel atomiser, the plug gets hot and you press a rubber bulb on the fuel tap and it squirts fuel over the hot heater causing it to light and voila!
Do the injectors just pull straight out after undoing the two nuts? - Yes
Can you replace the liners while the engine is in the machine (if i need too)? - No, they need to be pressed out, new ones fitted plus bored and honed.
Are dexta's live drive or just single clutch? - Live drive was an option so some are and some are not (the trick is to look at the clutch actuator)

Well ive been at it most of the day, with mixed results.
Got the front cowl, radiator, dynamo, and loader off today.
Engine is definetly seized, when i checked the oil it seems very very high on the dipstick (quite near the top), so this either means quite a bit of water has got down the exhaust and into the sump, or the block is cracked inside which is why the sump is full.
Anyone got any ideas?
I was going to try and drain the oil, but the sump plug is seized solid, god i love rust

I would reccomend that you drain the oil before attempting to remove the sump which is heavy lump of metal. If the drain plug is seized, you could drain the oil by removing the strainer which is attached to the round plate on the bottom of the sump.

If the engine is seized then you will need to split the tractor to enable the engine to be dismantled. Remove the cylinder head and pour some releaseall or Diesel on top of the pistons and leave it for a day or two. You will probably end up having to try and loosen the pistons using a block of wood and heavy hammer, they will only come out through the top of the block and if there is a wear ridge at the top of the liner it will have to be removed.

I have already started preparing to take the cylinder head off, then i can assess the damage.
It will probably be the weekend before i get going again on it
