Pressure in cooling system?

Post by conar22 »

Hi there, well i got my dexta started up for the first time tonight after a full rebuild-however i noticed that water seemed to be forced up the radiator pipe, but i couldnt see any obvious bubbles.....so what could be the cause of this? I had the cylinder head skimmed and the face of the block polished-so i doubt its the head gasket. Could it be a cracked cylinder head maybe?
Any help/advice much appreciated.
Thanks,conar

If you have filled the cooling system to the top, the water will expand a bit during warm up when you start the engine. However it should stop when reaching thermostat temp. :scratchhead:

Hi there, yes i have filled it to the top, then as the thermostat opens i topped up the water level-then it just slowly comes up the pipe and spills out continously.
Its got me confused anyway-ive helped to rebuild a few tractor before and this has certainly never happened. :?:
Maybe this is a stupid question but does the dexta have a pressurised cooling system and im worrying about nothing?

The coolant expands when it gets hot, so you shouldn't fill the rad to the top, but leave some space for expansion. Whether you have a pressurised system depends on what rad cap you have. If it's an original AC Delco RC5 or RB5 it is pressurised to 4lbs.
