Brake/Clutch Pedals Cross Shaft Oil Seals
Brake/Clutch Pedals Cross Shaft Oil Seals
I have a small oil leak from the brake/clutch cross shaft on my 1957 non live drive Major. Normally I would not worry but I have got to the repainting stage with my restoration and I do not want to spoil it now.I have had the pedals off already ( didnt notice the leak then) so no problem with doing that again but is there any trick to getting the oil seals out ? The manual indicates a special tool but not sure if this is essential. Any guidance appreciated.

The oil seal is all ready leaking, so is there is no reason to be careful. Most of the time the oil seal is destroyed when removing. Try to turn in a screw and press is out. Or just hook something behind it and pull. It's an easy job after removing the pedals and shift the axle to the side.

Thanks for the response. I have seen the video on Youtube re drilling a small hole and screwing in a ground down screw to force the oil seal out. I will give it a try. Just one thing I assume that I have to drain the rear axle or is it possible to do the job and just cope with some spillage. Bit reluctant to drain out all the lovely fresh oil that I only put in a few weeks ago. The repair manual does not mention draining the axle but perhaps it is a given.

The oil level is lower than the axle, so no worry.

Thanks Henk. i did not realise that. Probably explains why I did not notice the leak before since it was only a couple of weeks ago that she had a run to be steamed cleaned and that was her first outing under her own power for over two years. If the the oil level in the rear axle is below the cross shaft then it would not have shown up until the oil got thrown around a bit.

Re: Brake/Clutch Pedals Cross Shaft Oil Seals
Tried to remove one of the brake/clutch cross shaft seals but could only do so by breaking it up. I have got most of it out Ok but I am worried about the bits that might remain in the small area between the casting and the metal ring between the casting and the actual shaft. My worry is that any residual rubber will stop the new seal seating properly.Should this metal ring come out and then go back in with the new seal ? It does not seem to want to be removed.
Sorry that the picture is not too good.

The metal ring is part of the sealing so it has to be removed. Moost of the new sealings have the metal peace inside the rubber.

Five years ago I have never put a seal in anything. Now I'm telling you how to do it.

Does anyone know the size or number of these seals? My FPM restoration has been on hold for a while but now it's time to get going again and this is one of the jobs I need to adress. I'm quite happy right now since I've managed to buy a pair of NOS-fenders for it at a very reasonable price!
