Asbestos fire wall

Post by Noblett »

Hi all, I am currently preparing the metal work ready to paint. I have removed the asbestos fire wall from the bulk head to clean off and paint but don't no if I should put the asbestos back on. I don't want to rub the asbestos down for obvious reasons but I also don't want to put something that looks scruffy back on the nicely painted panels. I wanted you're opinions on what to do or what you have done when restoring you're dexta. Many thanks John.

If you have it removed I would leave it off.

My understanding is that the risk with asbestos is airborne particles. Theres still pleanty of it in use, for example in water mains, and because those applications prevent dust forming there is little or no risk. The no risk way is to dispose of it and replace it with something else. However, by painting it you effectivly encapsulate it preventing any dust from being generated. A carefull wash with a solvent like brakeclean, and painting. Don't sand it.

For a replacement I have often wondered what the fibre cement boards sold at building depots would be like?
