Tach drive cable
Tach drive cable
Hi put a new tach drive on my major last month but had yet no cable there’s not been a drive or cable on for well years the rev clock was still there so installed a cable yesterday started the tractor and the needle in the clock moved grand i stopped the tractor started it there now and the needle refused to move so i took the cable off at the drive to see if it would turn by hand and the inner bit the thing that actually spins was sheered off and sticking out off the drive can anyone shed any light on why this might have happened?
Re: Tach drive cable
Hi Icom
It could be that the gauge is partly seized up and was to stiff for the cable to turn I have seen this a few times where the thing has not been used for years the lube in the tach goes hard or dries out and makes it stiff to turn,
It could be that the cable is not wound the right way for the direction it is turning in. A few guys have commented on the forum about this before but I've never had that problem with mine so far. i think it winds the wire strands out in the cable so you cant pull the inner out if that happens, does the break look like it turns with the wire the way its wound or is it splayed like its unscrewed
.
i don't think it would be to tight a curve in the cable some where it would be pretty drastic to snap it in one short run or could the fitting be slightly different and the cable nipped a bit tight at the nut on one end.
the cable being to long could cause it to from some comments here before but I think it would be a longer time than one run.
Well thats all i can think of for you but im putting my money on the tach being seized right now. let us know what you find
Regards Robert

Re: Tach drive cable
The brake was down at the drive and it just looks sheered off hard to describe
Re: Tach drive cable
Ok take the cable off the clock end and get a very small flat blade screwdriver that will fit in the drive square and try turning the clock. if you turn it the right way the needle should flick. when you are doing this see if the thing turns really free or if it feels tight.
if its tight put wd 40 or something like that round the part the cable fits in on the clock then spin it and see if it frees up any. it could be stuck further in the clock too . I have sprayed wd in the hole where the light fits on the back before to free the insides. if you do this do not tip the clock upside down as the oil runs on the face and inside the glass and ruins the clock
