1964 super major
I need to get info on hydrolic pump location and install procedure. I have a backhoe on mine and want to put the 3 point back on. I have all the components for it except the pump. I can't find it anyways. If i have to buy a pump i can't figure out how it is driven. I pulled the top cover off and don't see anything that would tell me i have a pump. Would a pump be obvious in there? help me please!!

This is the best picture I have at this time. Taken a few years ago before I changed the oil!

Hydraulic pump is between the two gear wheels, the return pipe is bolted to one of the three mounting bolts. The pressure pipe goes around the front of the dif.
Pump drives from a gear on the PTO shaft so the PTO has to be engaged to get the hydraulics to work.
You may need an intake filter and if your tractor is an industrial, it is possible you do not have a pump pedestal for the pump to mount on.

Hi Guys
If the tractor is an industrial with back hoe what would be the chances it doesn't have the pto engagement/ drive box at the bottom of the main gearbox and no pto shaft. I have seen blanking plates installed at both places before on majors when the parts aren't fitted.

It has an active pto that works. I purchased all the three point parts, but don't have a pump at all. thanks for the pic of the rear diff by the way. I was wondering if anyone had a pump. I also noticed that my pto shaft doesn't have a driving gear for the pump, but it is keyed for a gear toward the back part of the pto shaft inside diff. Does anyone have any good places to track down parts, and a vetran super major mechanic?? Both seem hard to find in my area:-)

S/H pumps come up on E-Bay and some of the after-market dealers offer new ones. Would not pay too much for a s/h one as they can be worn. Drive gear needs to come from a breakers.
Check that you have the pipes, filter, back pressure valve and the little "half moon" collets that hold the pressure pipe in place, amongst your parts.
You do not say where you are to find a "veteran Ford Mechanic" in your area.

I am in Washington State USA. Not alot of Super Majors over here. I have all the parts that where mentioned. I just don't have the pump and drive gear on my PTO. Need to try and find some of that stuff some where. Thanks for your help here what a great site.

Just a thought here if your serial numbers tie the tractor to 1964 that tractor was Badged as a ford 5000 diesel for Canada and America. it was painted with blue body, white/creamy color hood/ fenders and wheels.
But don't get it confused with the later ford 5000 6x from 1965 and y world wide series from a bit later they where blue body/ hood and white/grey wheels and fenders and the tin work is a completely different shape to what you have on yours .
Try looking for parts that way as they may not know it as a fordson super major if your wrecking guys are as dumb as some of them here in Canada. Ive had guys call power majors- super powers and all sorts of screwed up names



I think Bear Creek Majors ( pat) has a picture of his on the forum some where so you could see what it looks like if you could find it or he reads this and posts a picture of it or ask in a new post for a picture of one and see what shows up

Yes I have run into all sorts of stuff searching for parts. Mine is a Super major/5000 it is painted yellow but at one point in its life it was blue and it is gonna be blue again I just haven't got to that part yet. I would have to agree that there are some dummies out there when it comes to this finding info on this tractor. I can't seem to find anyone in America that has any idea how to work on it or find parts. I find this funny because it is one heck of a tractor I would have thought it would have been popular here as well as Europe. I really need pictures of the pump installed or some sort of manual that gives me step by step instructions to install it. I have found a parts tractor in Oregon so i hope that all the parts workout. Thanks for all your help if their is any need to know info about this tractor that you guys can share let me know.

Hi Justin, this pic shows the pump mounted in my Power Major, same set up as the Super other than the plumbing you can see in Brians pic. Your bottom cover should have the mounting bosses with threaded holes to mount the pump to,I'm assuming the industrials got the same cover as well, if unsure post a pic and we can give you a yay or nay. after you look at it the install is farly straight forward and we can help you through it. You will need the drive gear, it slips on the PTO shaft and is heald in place with a snapring, then the shaft is slid into the rear housing and fits between the mounting bosses of the pump and bottom cover. Be sure you get all the parts from a Super Major, especialy the drive gear, and be sure they get you all the pices parts including the steel lines insid the housing, the C clip that holds the line in the housing,(verry important) and I'd have them send everything including the nuts and bolts.
I'm assuming the backho had a PTO driven hyd pump?

Thanks for the pictures. This is very helpfull for me to see what i am suppose to have so i can get it right the first install and not have to pull it apart while guessing how it should look. I do have a bottom cover, I will post some pics in the next couple of days so you guys can check this mean machine out and let me know if that bottom cover is what i need. Does the PTO shaft have to come out to get the pump in?? I do have to put a drive gear for pump on pto. That will be the next thing i need to figure out how to do. Thanks again guys I appreciate it.

I have all the lines and those C shaped things that hold the line from dropping into the rearend. I am unclear how the return line is held in place and does it have o rings or rubber washers that go on it?? I am waiting on the pump and hardware before i start putting it all back together. Should get it tomarrow and start peicing it together in a couple more days. can't wait. I am hoping that everything works once i get it together. Used parts scare me
Got a thirty day return/replace policy that is good. Backhoe and loader are driven off of front mount PTO pump.

Return filter is either held in by a bracket that locates on one of the pump mounting bolts or, like in my picture, a bracket that is brazed onto the pressure pipe. These brackets gave a bit of a problem by breaking so the pump to filter bracket was introduced in later tractors.
It fits on the filter pipe using the back pressure valve to hold it, as this is threaded into the pipe.

Well it looks like you got most what you needed to know
It says in my book that if you don't have the pump drive gear on the pto shaft you need a gear with 34 teeth as the older super had 33.
I also read in Pats post he said the fenders should be blue Both the 5000 type tractors I have had the fenders where cream the same as the hood one was original factory color and the other is under the junk every body else put on, the cream is coming through where the other is washing off. so dont know if pat has the wrong color or they changed them at some point ive never seen blue fenders on the 5000 the super before these that had orange wheels where.

Robert is probably correct about the fender color, this one has always puzzled me as almost every Super you see has grey fenders including both of my Counties. This Super only had one fender on it when I got it, but the one that was there is painted blue and it has blue paint on it where its bolted to the foot boards, and the tractor has never been repainted….. but someone surly could have replaced the fender. Maybe early on they got repaired or replaced and painted the wrong color.

If your tractor had a fender missing I think its probably safe to say somebody put the wrong one on. the fenders had a bad habit of rotting the support ribs and the front face in the same location, if they get bad enough they fall off. The ones I have are not bad but the ones on the tractor I sold needed heavy Repair
. its getting hard to find good originals up here in Canada, A guy from the U.K is shipping all the good tractor tin back, and the wreckers don't want to sell good tin to the locals only the junk they can't ship
just a thought here does your blue fender have a big hole with 2 smaller ones (1 each side of the big hole) drilled in the location
of the top end of the front fender support or a triangular shaped raised bracket there, If it has then its an early fender the holes or bracket are for side marker lights, the 5000 fenders don't have those holes for the brackets from the ones I have had or seen around

Well the pump is installed and pumping and the Rockshaft is installed and rocking. It goes up and down so I guess the next step is get an implament on there and test it out. The next project is power steering. I have it on there already but the cylinder and valve are shot. I need to find a replacement cylinder for it. Anyone have a Super Major P ower steeringCylinder???
