Just bought my first diesel major and has a few faults there is a milky residue in the top of the rocker box any ideas what it could be and how to fix also the gear lever twist around about a quater of a turn but can still get all gears again what could be the fault and how to fix it?

The milky residue could just be from condensation. Clean it up and see how it goes from there. If you are not loosing coolant, it will not be a problem.
The shifter housing has a hole with a pin on the side that keeps the shifter from spinning. Sometimes these push out and the the shifter spins. Get the shifter lined up the right way and then use a small punch to put the pin back into the slot milled in the shifter ball. Dandy Dave!
