numbering of bores?? helppp

hello guys may seem a stupid post to you, but i am nearing dropping my pistens in and they all are marked with numbers 1-4/ so my question is what order is the numbering of the bores itself or does it go it a firing order?? had best get it right lol

It is front of engine to back of engine.
No 1 = water pump end
No 4 = flywheel end
