Oil level plug

Please can someone tell me what the correct name for the "Oil Level Plug" is and what thread pitch we are looking at. Unfortunately the thread on my plug is stripped. I am aware that it is a 1/4" plug but does it have a standard thread?

Hi Mervyn, the online Parts List (see Dexta 'sticky' here) lists the plug as "Plug, Pipe, 1/4"-18, Oil Level, Years: 01-JAN-57-31-DEC-64".

So it says it's a 'pipe' thread. 18 will be the turns/inch. Interestingly this doesn't seem to BSP as 1/4" would have 19 TPI, see here http://www.pipefittingsdirect.co.uk/con ... cation.pdf

But it appears to be 1/4" NPT which has 18TPI, eg see here http://www.fairburyfastener.com/xdims_pipe_threads.htm

You can check the OD to confirm. Suggest you take it to a machine shop who should be able to match it up. Or wait till Gerald comes along here, I expect he knows!

Yeas I agree that according to the spares list it is 1/4" NPT. TPI is an abbreviation for Threads Per Inch.

Whilst the level plug is NPT, the spares list suggests that the drain plug is 3/4" BSP. At least that is how I as an engineer would read it.

Thanks gentlemen, you boys are so on the ball it is unbelievable. I was moping around the home yesterday because I could not find the information I was looking for and could not wait for Monday to arrive. My lucky day . I visited a tractor spares dealer, can't help but referred me to a Nut and Bolt shop, cant help but suggested that I try the plumbing business up the road, can't help but try Stevens valves. The gentleman asks how many do you want? Only one I say. He goes to the back of his business comes back with the plug, hands it to me and says don't worry about paying. One way of encouraging future business. Another item I can tick off.

Ben, it screwed in fine for a few turns then I had to use a 3/8" spanner to tighten it up. The female thread in the housing did have a bit of over spray but that soon gave way. I also tried it on a 1963 gearbox and it was fine. The proof will come when I get to the stage when I fill the transmission box with oil.
